Re: Skimming in Basel at ATMs

Trouble is, the banks are very industrious at introducing new kinds of ATMs with all sorts of funny looking gimmickry, especially around the card slot. I recently saw one in the Grisons, with kind of a transparent neon-look plastic funnel in front of the slot, looking like a part from a designer kitchen appliance. I had to go inside to ask the bank guys if that was alright. It was.

I've had this happen recently but traced it to my card details being skimmed in Cologne. The bank (french) did reimburse the money but only after a very tedious process.

Re: Skimming in Basel at ATMs

I am not 100% sure...

In the last credit card statement, the lady noticed that there were some positively dubious transactions. Apparently she went on a shopping spree - all over the US and Europe (only USD and Euro charges). The dates from which the "phony" transactions commenced coincided with a trip we made to Amsterdam. So we strongly suspect that the card got skimmed somewhere - but where we haven't the foggiest idea.

She filed a complaint with the credit card provider, they promptly canceled the card, asked her to identify the dubious transactions, sign an affidavit and suggested that she could get the money back. We are still waiting and hoping.

I would be inclined to point fingers in the direction of Amsterdam, but if they have been skimming data from debit cards (that too at the ATM ) in Basel, what is to stop criminal minded people from skimming data from the card machines???

Caution is your good friend.

Some pictures of original cash machines, and manipulations,

http://www.20min.ch/news/kreuz_und_q...=16821&index=0

I always try and use ATMs inside the banks. I believe the cameras inside the banks would deter any thief from bringing in a dummy keyboard, and manipulating the cash machine.

I once read somewhere that the machines inside the buildings are less likely to be tampered with. I avoid cash machines and only use when desperate.

Re: Skimming in Basel at ATMs

It's not just cash machines. Any card-reader has the potential to be modified for skimming purposes. I lost 5000 franks (temporarily, thanks UBS!) from a skimmer at a SBB ticket machine. Others have described being skimmed from a point-of-purchase machine. The fact is that these tampered machines are all over the place.

Simple solution. Just put your hand up to cover your PIN as you enter it. All these skimmer machines AND the over-the-shoulder spyers need to see you enter your PIN.

Just put your hand up; after a few times it becomes automatic - like putting your seatbelt on in a car.

If you like digging into these kind of topics, I suggest you to read this article and keep an eye on the entire website,

http://krebsonsecurity.com/all-about-skimmers/

Thankfully, I have managed to cancel all my ATM ops and if I need money in hand, I just go to the Teller. Sometimes annoying, indeed, but way safer.

You have to watch out for payment by card in every business too, as they might get hacked and steal all your card data anyway, so you are not safe by any mean nowadays

Not always: some skimmers replace the keyboard too instead of using a camera.

And there was a huge case where someone modified a whole load of card terminals in India before they got shipped to shops in the UK. They added a chip into the device which recorded and sent card details.

The bank should have algorithms in place to block all cards used at this place as soon as the dodgy transactions began showing up. With the data the bank has, it's pretty easy to work out where and when they were skimmed and send the local police around to deal with it.

Re: Skimming in Basel at ATMs

Sometimes works the way around and instead of being beneficial is not. i.e. my wife traveled to the other side of the world and she used her DC and automatically got it blocked. My wife didn't know what was happening (because she couldn't contact the bank directly by phone) until she came back a month later, realizing the bank did their job quite efficiently but she was cursing the bank all over this and I told her, be glad they did!

BTW, I've read that if someone hijacks your CC, the bank can return the money to your account (conditions apply) but if you use a DC, they automatically deny it..
