You see - that's were protestants like Zwingli went wrong: Where I come from, a good old fashioned catholic area, all types of heretics, witches and so on were burned, not drowned. Hell is eternal flames, not eternal Zürichsee...
I gather they had fun first by watching if they'd swim, THEN they'd have been burned.... sorry, no more gruesome stuff tonight, promise..

just a technicality, it was NOT in the eternal Zürichsee but in the equally eternal Limmat, just beside the Wasserkirche

where the perpetrators met their end

The OP doesn't "feel strongly about it". She expressed a preference, but already stated that she's not really that hung up about it.

It's only because she was challenged about her preference that she felt obliged, presumably, to defend her position.

Anyway, what's there to get your head round? She's not expecting you to observe her sabbath, is she?

Or the other way round. In most Muslim countries they are better tolerated by the rest of the people than in many others.

But, this is hairsplitting rubbish. Whether she feels strongly or not strongly about Saturday is of no relevance, and most people on here are of course ready to allow her to observe any kind of holiday on any day of the week. But, the point still is that the day of prayer and of religious services here in Switzerland IS Sunday. That Jews have their day on Saturday and Muslims theirs on Friday is a different topic.

On a different platform is the fact that Catholic churches tend to be open to some extent throughout the week, while most Protestant churches at least in Switzerland tend to be closed from Monday to Saturday. With the exceptions of culturally important places of course.

That she may find it difficult to find Christian churches here doing services on Saturday, BUT may find some places, is a minor thing. That she while doing so may place her seriously OUTSIDE MAINSTREAM however may be socially VERY serious !

You cannot have integration on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and something else on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday !

Re: looking for a church to join in AG

A hallmark of German theology, since Luther, has been a strong tie between the state and church, regarded as part of the natural order - this has also been part of Swiss church identity. This tradition is not so strong in England, and obviously not in the US, with their firm distinction between church and states. So it's not surprising to find a strong reaction against free churches from some forum members. To be a part of a church that's not state is/was regarded as tantamount to treason.

Quote:
Sadly, many do not agree. If Christians can't even agree on a Day of worship, what chance have they got to agree on anything that matters?
The Swiss Evangelical Alliance has many free and state churches working together - even in Zürich. In Basel, the leaders of SEA members - which includes the Anglican church, Oikos, Baptists, ICF Basel (aka "the freaks", apparently), the salvation army and a fair few Ev. Ref. churches (so a very wide range of experience and practice) - meet regularly to discuss ways of collaborating.

So there's quite a lot of agreement.

The website has a good resource to find protestant churches that are perhaps less insular, yet are still not bordering on the unorthodox, with some kind of oversight.

In the OP's local area, there are these churches.

You said it, Wolli.

You've already been shown that this is a false assertion. Must you be quite so unhelpful to the OP?

Rubbish! People can attend whatever type of church they like, without regard for the 'mainstream', whatever on earth that is!

Quote:

Also complete and utter nonsense. Over the last couple of years, I have attended a German speaking Baptist church (for 'integration') and an English speaking Anglican church (for 'sustenance'). Attending a church isn't just about integration, nor is it just about spirituality. People attend church for many different reasons.

Who are you to tell the OP what kind of church she must attend, when you know nothing about her, her beliefs or her expectations?

It seems that certain individuals have difficulty understanding that their opinion and outlook isn't the only possible, sensible and coherent one.

To be fair, a lot more Christians were burnt and tortured by each other, for all sorts of disagreements on the interpretation of the Bible. In some countries, homosexuals are still beaten, maimed and killed to this very day. I just cannot get my head around it, so it is best if I just wish you good luck with your search.

like you expect statistics to affect a christian who wants to maintain a PERSONAL relationship with his/her God. But dont be dismayed, only minority of us feel strongly about sabbaths. I dont need luck coz it is my pleasure to search for the truth, knowing that i dont need to but i still do.
However, im dismayed that you have nothing to contribute to this thread asking for useful info on something but u still come in here to do the opposite when ur welcome in other threads meant for venting out your frustrations, as it appears u have quite some. I might even join you in ranting, but in another thread.

Where im from, theres bible meetings that can be in any day of the week. If theres a church that has that schedule, then thats perfect for me. Doesnt mean i cant go to sundays either.

Re: looking for a church to join in AG

Religion threads... always interesting.

A few points of clarification:

Concerning the state-church connection, some cantons including Geneva and Basel-Stadt have already instituted separation-of-church-and-state policies long ago. But even if there is a state church in a canton, one is free to start a different church. State churches are not unusual in Europe and it includes England (the nominal head of the Church of England is the reigning monarch). I believe France is the only country in Europe like the US where the separation of church and state is stated explicitly in their constitutions.

The statement that Christians cannot agree on the day of worship is not quite correct. The vast majority, Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox worship on Sunday and only a small percentage of churches from the American Restorationist movement (and other Sabbatharian communities) worship on Saturday.

Having said that Switzerland is an open country and largely admits anyone to worship freely in their own way. So one might be able to find an English-speaking, Saturday-worshipping, not-too-heterodox, largely-tolerant church. But with all those adjectives, it might be a bit difficult to find one that is by chance close by!

I think most people here (at least the ones who have thousands of posts ) are pretty thick-skinned by now and are not offended.

Interesting thread, but I agree that as your questions has been answered, it is time to close it.
