I love my adult English students, really I do. They are diligent, punctual and enthusiastic about grammar, vocab exercises and some reading. They do their homework and even ask questions about it.

Today, I decided to take another approach to English and did an exercise with some popular British celebrities.

Most didn't even know who George Michael was.

Moral of the story:

It's hard to teach English using famous people
or
George Michael should start visiting public toilets in Switzerland.

Re: And they didn't even know George Michael

Thanks for the great comments.

My students are between 25 and 70. The younger students definitely didn't know him.

When someone mentioned "Last Christmas", most could finally place him.

Maybe I should use Dieter Bohlen next time.

And for those on the board who are still confused, here's what I consider Wham's best song:

Just don't put him down as the designated driver

Hats off for the graffiti <wham> indeed.

I wracked my brains trying to think of Wham's best song, then I realised they were all shite.

How old are your students? I mean George Michael peaked over twenty years ago so if they are twenty something, then perhaps that's not too surprising.

Gee, I guess I gave away what age group I'm NOT in ...
Nooooooooo, I was into his music in the later 90s - Jesus to a Child, Freedom, Praying for Time and all that. His album, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael has achieved classic status with me, and have always been a favourite! Despite his toilet prowling, weed-smoking shennanigans, I'm a fan. Did I just show my age too...

It's good to know he used his prison experience as inspiration.
I hear he's reworked an old classic of his and re-titled it:

"Hairless Fister"
*groan*

Is it just me, or did anyone else half expect everyone in that video to start stripping naked and turning into an 80s porn film? The introduction sure felt like it. Not that I've seen many 80s porn of course...

Haha. I almost posted it but decided it would only get deleted anyway.

The second comment truly says it all about the song.
