Anyone have the Migros Cumulus Mastercard?

I have the application forms in front of me, and despite having a mediocre command over French, I can't seem to wrap my head around it...

At first, I imagined it would be like the point-collecting schemes in the UK (e.g. Sainsburys, Tesco, Co-op), but it seems that that's a bit too "free" for Switzerland.

Could someone explain the costs associated with this card?

What are the benefits?

Most importantly, is it worth it?

it's worth it! I've been using it since 2008 (i have the 10k limit) and the good thing with this card is there are no annual charge.

it is a point-collecting scheme for your cumulus points too.

Re: Anyone have the Migros Cumulus Mastercard?

I'm also interested in this card, from what I've read there is no yearly fee - a plus :-)

However I think I'm right in saying there's a 1.5% charge when using abroad

For me the idea of this card is for collecting points as it can be connected to your m-cumulus card but if you are abroad you only get 1 point per 2chf as opposed to the 1 point per 1chf in Switzerland.

Edit:
CHF 1 in Migros = 1 point
CHF 2 outside Migros = 1 point

Re: Anyone have the Migros Cumulus Mastercard?

Are you talking about the free card you can get ?

No costs, and when you spend a certain amount you get vouchers for $$$$

Not sure what the amounts are but every couple of months we get between 10 and 40 chuffs in vouchers.

Re: Anyone have the Migros Cumulus Mastercard?

Ah okay, I think I see the error in my thinking. Correct me if I'm wrong:

I have forms for a CUMULUS-Mastercard, which is in effect a credit card.
There must also exist a normal cumulus card which is simply for collecting points for Migros purchases.

If so, I'd just need to get the latter...

Re: Anyone have the Migros Cumulus Mastercard?

Yes M cumulus is just a bonus point collecting type thing, you can apply online and it will arrive by post or just pop into a Migros and you can pick up a pack complete with card straight away.

It's actually an over 3% charge because they use a loaded exchange rate that is far worse than the actual Mastercard exchange rate.

There's an online hidden charge calculator for foreign transactions here:

http://www.xe.com/ccc/

Although the SBB Halbtax with Credit Card advertises a higher foreign transaction charge, their hidden fees are less and it worked out slightly cheaper than the Cumulus card when I compared what they actually charged me.

I have yet to find any CC that doesn't penalise you in some way for international use, whether it be as a fixed %, or a bad exchange rate for the time of use, they will make their money one way or another

Re: Anyone have the Migros Cumulus Mastercard?

Hi guys,

Apologies for reactivating an old thread but I just wanted to get your opinions on this card as I do 99% of my shopping in Migros and wanted a credit card for certain online purchases.

So, please correct me if I'm wrong:

a) no annual fee.
b) 9.9% interest (does this only come into play if I don't pay the card bill within the time frame allocated?)
c) Are there any transaction fees? E.g. whenever I make a purchase in a shop or online, do I pay a fee or a percentage to the issuer of the card?

Thanks.

Re: Anyone have the Migros Cumulus Mastercard?

Hi Oukka

Correct on point a and point b. On point C if you spend anything locally in CHF then you don't pay any fee but for certain type of transaction you might attract a fee, e.g. withdrawal of cash, international shopping or spend etc. But these are very standard charges which you will pay to any other credit card company.

If your main use is to spend it in migros, coop or local retailer it surely is one of the best option. The Loyalty is managed by Migros and not by the credit card company so it is fair and square. You might also want to look at Coop supercard or SBB halb tax as credit card..

No. As mentioned above they get commission on transactions in foreign currencies. You get 1% back on purchases at migros, and 0.5% on other transactions, to spend at migros.

Thank you so much! Do you happen to know what the rates are for withdrawing and international transactions (e.g. purchasing on Amazon UK)? I called their customer service and both their English and french representatives were a joke (not a good start, I know).
