Besides Zurich any other towns/suburbs near Schaffhausen with lots of US Expats

Considering taking a role in Schaffhausen, trying to find other locations besides Zurich where there are tons of Expats that is safe, friendly, and comfortable for wife and kids (for example: Mommy and me classes with other English speaking Expats...). Interested in your thoughts/suggestions of towns that would be good for our family and relatively close to Schaffhausen (maybe 20 minutes or so driving to work). Look forward to your open and honest advice.

Thanks.

Open and honest..? Depending on your definition of "tons", Zürich is pretty much the start and end of the list. If you found a place in one of the more north-eastern suburbs (Oerlikon, Wipkingen) then your commute would be around 45 minutes to Schaffhausen (based on an ex-GF's daily commute from those areas).

The closest place with ex-pats would be Winterthur, but I couldn't hand on heart say there are "tons". Commute from there would probably be 20-30 minutes at a guess.

Perhaps the better long term policy would be to learn German? Initially it would be real effort but would pay off later down the line?

Really you are considering moving to a German speaking area and it's always going to be a strain to find expats for these various events.

I should take my own advice really with regard to learning the lingo, then again I'm lazy and can get away with it.

Appreciate the comments so far, yes have purchased Rosetta Stone and plan on taking German classes. So will try to blend with the culture, but looking for an occasional english conversation from time to time.

Regards a 'safe' area, Switzerland is pretty much safe all over compared to other countries

If you want to be around ex pats then I agree with Terryhall find a place near Oerlikon station then you are amongst ex pats and also within the city most people in shops etc... speak English

there are loads of us expats in and around schaffhausen, it has become a very international town and you would not find it difficult to meet with many english speakers. If you (or your partner)are working for unilever we also have a very active unilever partners network in SH too with numerous activities etc.

Wouldn't actually consider oerilikon and wipkingen suburbs, but areas of Zurich

Why don't you move your family to Schaffhausen? I've just got back from 3 weeks working there, I work for an American company based there, and I know there are at least 2 other American companies in the City so there's bound to be plenty of ex-pats.

When I visit I try to integrate with the locals and practice my very basic German. I am probably going to be relocating there in a few months time and have decided Schaff is the place to live. It's a great place for families and just about has something for everyone. There's an ice-rink, outdoor swimming pool, parks, football stadium and just about everything for families, not to mention the wonderful Rheine.

There are lots of expats in the Baden region and you will find many English speakers. Starbucks is coming to Baden at the end of year so I am sure many expats will be found around there. However, the commute to Schaffhausen would be longer than 20 minutes. Difficult to say how long it will be, depends on which side of Baden you were to live.

There of course ARE native English speakers living IN Schaffhausen and in the area. And Schaffhausen is closely linked by S-Bahn and other rail lines to Zurich.

Re: Besides Zurich any other towns/suburbs near Schaffhausen with lots of US Expats

Just an FYI:

As you choose where to live, be aware of the tax consequences of your choice. This sometimes catches Americans unawares, we are not used to the idea that evry town might have a different tax rate.

If you will be on Quellensteuer, you only need to concern yourself with the differences among cantons. If you are not on Quellensteuer, you should also to look at Gemeinde rates as well.

So when evaluating an area, figure taxes into your cost of living comparision.

(And don't forget to add your US liability to the equation.)

---

Aside from that, choose the area where you feel comfortable - and where you can actually find appropriate housing. This is often the biggest challenge, depending on your needs.

I would worry less about finding a concentration of expats. There are many of us around, all over the map - but keep in mind that Switzerland really is a small country. Hopping on a train to meet with friends in ZH, Baden, or beyond is easy.

Re: Besides Zurich any other towns/suburbs near Schaffhausen with lots of US Expats

Unless you're willing to go to Zurich, your best bet in the region is to stay in Schaffhausen. Due to the number of international companies which have set up there over the last ten years there's a lot of English-speaking expats there now.
I wouldn't recommend the Baden-Schaffhausen commute. I had a colleague who tried this, but left the company within a year as she spent too much time traveling.

That would be a great idea! Also moved to Schaffhausen a few months ago and besides a few people from work, it has been challenging to meet other expats.
