| | DIY on a Sunday???
Hi All,
My husband and I have found ourselves housebound today as our little boy is poorly ...we have just moved into a new apartment and want to hang some pictures, etc while we have the day free. Is this allowed on a Sunday?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Vicki |

Theoretically you shouldn't make any noise on Sunday, but why not ask your neighbours if it's ok with them? They are probably out anyway.

The noise of drilling or bashing holes in a wall tends to carry a long way though, so it's certainly not just your direct neighbours who will be affected if you live in a built up area. We cheerily knocked a channel in our wall for an electric cable to go in on a wet Sunday, many years ago in Basel! Oh dear.
The neighbours in the adjoining house didn't like that one bit - and I don't blame them. We just didn't think of the racket we were making, not only in the four-family house we lived in, but also in theirs. Chip, chip, chunk, chip, chip, chunk... We were very lucky to get away with their simple request to stop it.

Longbyt has a point, if you are going for major work like drilling, then I'd only go for it if you can ask everyone in the house. If there are older people living there, then it's difficult because some say it's ok when asked and then write a letter to the landlord to complain...

No, its not allowed on a Sunday. It will be in your house rules? There should be one hanging on the notice board, or your landlord may have handed you one.
No drilling, banging, and in my house the beating of carpets are not allowed Sundays, and between 11h30 and 13h00 - everyday!
WELCOME TO SWITZERLAND!!
btw you should be allowed to drill until 10pm on a week day

I know what I would prefer my neighbour to do! | This user would like to thank for this useful post: | |

If you are in a traditional Catholic area, it is a definite no. But as always- it's a question of common sense. Knock on the neighbours door and ask them if they mind, explaining you won't make a habit of it. Here in our hamlet, people were very careful with not doing noisy work in garden, or putting washing out- until my dad died, not because he would have complained, but just out of respect. Now nobody cares, and we often make a joke of it. Arrghh if Mr G. was here, and we have a beer or glass of wine to his health.
Wherever I've lived, I've always had a good relationship with my neighbours, because it makes life so much more pleasant, and helps with such matters. They helped us, we helped them - give and take, a laugh over the fence, borrowing sugar (brown or white), helping with gardening, decorating, kids, etc. What comes round goes around.
Hope your little boy feels better soon.

... | | | | | But you can start at 6:45am!
In a small village in Solothurn, a friend of mine was fined for burning some waste wood (which was allowed) on a sunday, which wasn't. The village worthies who came along to issue his fine, helpfully pointed out that if he'd had a foil tray and some sausages, then there wouldn't have been a problem. Working on Sunday - no. Barbecue - yes!
