List of "unwritten" rules?

Hi,

I just moved to Zürich a couple of days ago and I've followed this forum a lot - however, new things keep getting up all the time - e.g. no noise after 10pm and the whole sunday.

Is there a list somewhere about these "rules" and could there be serious consequences of accidentally breaking them?

Regards
Kristian

Depends on your neighbours

You can start first of all by reading your gemeinde's website. Look specifically for "Lärmschutzverordnung" or your rental contract ("hausordnung") for starters. The rest are usually depending on how tolerant your neighbours are. Do a search on the forum (for: noisy neighbours) and these stories are a dime a dozen

Re: List of "unwritten" rules?

Just get to know your neighbours, be friendly - and ask them. Even in Switzerland, we are all different, with varied expectations. People often complain about not being 'allowed' to pull the WC chain or make noise late at night - but again, if you live in a block of apartments with very noisy plumbing, and your bed is near the down pipe - do YOU really want to hear THEIR WC in the middle of the night?? Personally I've always chosen to live with lots of space in the country and to have NO close neighbours or share my house (yes that means living out in the sticks, but it suits US) - but what come round goes around - and if you expect others to tolerate YOUR lots of noise, then you will have to put up with THEIRS.

I hope they don't expect you to leave your shit in the WC the whole night, because they might be able to hear it, if they aren't sleeping anyway.. ;O

Anyway, at least one of my neighbors seems to "chill" with it - they were listening to loud music around 11pm yesterday for half an hour.

I didn't meet any of the people living here yet, except one guy, but he had a really weird accent and i didnt really get what he was trying to say to me.

If it's yellow, let it mellow (if it's brown, flush it down) - again, common sense! Each to their own - as always- but if you do not make the effort to get to know your neighbours, be friendly, helpful, etc- don't be surprised if they don't bend over backwards the day YOU need help, a friendly chat, a shoulder to cry on, etc.

Nothing unwritten about those rules. They are clearly spelled out in your rental agreement.

The unwritten rule is "think about what would p*ss you off and assume it will p*ss others off".

Living in a city you can get away a lot more with noise because the city is generally a noisy place. Out in boonies it's a different story because it's easier to shatter the peace.

Why? Do they begin to sing after a while?

This depends a lot from one person to an other. Some don't like strong curry smell, some don't like cigarettes smoke in their home, some don't like loud music, etc... What someone can tolerate may be completely different than the guy next door. Some won't tolerate anything and others will tolerate everything.

If you are from a loud family you might not realise how loud you sound to others and it can be annoying indeed, etc...

Better to see with the rental company, in your contract and check with the neighbours.

No, but some of them start to hum...

and if you're from a Spanish family and grew up in Madrid, then you definitely don't know how loud you are.

I swear to God... I spent a week in Madrid with friends and I didn't sleep a wink the whole time due to their noisy neighbors. Who the hell remodels a kitchen at 1:00am?

My friends on the other hand, sleep right through everything. Oddly when they come to visit me they can't sleep because it is too quiet.

Haha.

Re: List of "unwritten" rules?

I think you eventually will get used to either noise or silence when you sleep. I was raised on the countryside with absolute silence when i slept, however the two last years i lived in a rather large city in Denmark and i got used to the noise and when i visited my parents i couldnt sleep because it was too silent.

However, i understand why people want silence in the night, but i dont get this sunday thing. Is this for whole Switzerland? I guess you are still allowed to watch TV, use the dishwasher etc. right?

Yes you are, but you just have to be sensitive to your environment. If you live in a residential area with a bunch of old dears, you might want to lay off the loud barbecue parties in your back yard. If, on the other hand, you live with a bunch of Italians and Albanians, you can do pretty much whatever you fancy on a Sunday.

It's like Fasnacht outside our window right now, and we live well outside the big city.

It's the out-of-the-ordinary noisy stuff; DIY, playing a musical instrument, in some places you can't use the laundry because there is an apartment directly above, play loud music.

Like others have said, check your apartment contract but I'd bet it doesn't say you can't watch TV or use the dishwasher.

Re: List of "unwritten" rules?

The problem is i dont have my contract yet, since my company signed an initial contract for me, before i came here, then ill sign it myself in a couple of weeks.

I guess I have to speak with the neighbors at some point, at least I can hear one of their televisions as i write, so obviously they wont complain

Re: List of "unwritten" rules?

I couldn't go out today, so I passed the vaccuum cleaner, mop the floor (actually hubby did those tasks) but I did the laundry.

In our place, it isn't a problem because it is well isolated and we are with young families all around!

Re: List of "unwritten" rules?

What about rules about curtain/nudity? Ive seen our neighbor showering many times behind the glass window of their bathroom (no curtains). She lives in a building in front of us. The light is behind her and i can see half of her body, asian nipples and all. Our breakfasts and sometimes dinners get awkward as we´re overlooking this show.

We have the same. They're in their own houses - if we have a problem with them being naked at home, that's our problem not theirs.

We just look at the mountains instead.

After all, who wants to look at some hairy arsed member of the proletariat taking his shower?

Im bothered because SHE IS HOT. And my husband(to be) can see it. But he looks away, while im mesmerized, for 10 minutes not eating anymore. Maybe this is good for my diet! And maybe its making me look jealous.
