This is a peculiarly British thing. I'd never seen them until I lived in England. Hence, FrankS's comment is appropriate:

Exactly why the British need a plastic washing up bowl to put inside their steel (or porcelain, or plastic) washing up sink, I have no idea.
I think it may have to do with the separate hot and cold water spigots that you still encounter in the UK.

As Official Pontificator of Soupiness Of Spoons, I can confirm that:

  • the spoon proferred yesterday by DB as "a soup spoon" was measured to have indeed sufficient depth of bowl to be acceptable in polite company as a soup spoon, and was therefore ruled to be a Soup Spoon;
  • the spoon proferred yesterday by DB as "not a soup spoon" was measured to have insufficient depth of bowl to be acceptable in polite company as a soup spoon, and was therefore ruled to not be a Soup Spoon;
  • Wollishofener's insistence on having seen two soup spoons yesterday is testament (if indeed any were required) to the interesting effects of Steve at the Rappi Beer Factory's new XXA India pale ale.
    Unlike Red Bull, it won't give you wings - you may, however, end up seeing things like Wolli did

Your honour. I have discovered an American video about formal table settings demonstrating with what appears to be a non-rounded soup spoon. What are you views?

I suspect you'll find that the answer lies in the question.

As previously stated, the key indicator of the soupiness of a spoon is defined not only by its plan view but also by its profile - neatly encapsulated in a basic way in any given spoon's cubic_capacitylan_area ratio.

For more accurate measurement of soupiness, one must of course look to a spoon's Reynold's Number.

And certainly not from anything American that claims to know anything about etiquette

Re: Soup Spoons [and other things "missing" in Switzerland]

Will round soup spoons become Swiss national soup standard is the question

And anyway soup is a French word, like beef, mutton, cream, butter- oops no, butter is German.

One would not eat soup from any of those vessels. They are all appropriate (taste-dependent, of course ) for serving soup. (The small bowl in the drawing is excepted.)

But what has this to do with soup spoons? Or are you going to claim that a ladle is a spoon is a spoon?

The question was about what bowls to take the soup from, into the dishes and from there up by spoon

And whilst anyone is at it, what else is missing here that you wouldn't immediately think of but is popular elswhere in the big world?
Handguns, murders, mass killings,rapes, muggings, fearing to walk outside at night and for the most part, idiots

Re: Soup Spoons [and other things "missing" in Switzerland]

Referring to my earlier post, I can recommend the absolute and final test of a potential soup spoon. When one is fighting over the maraschino cherry (without the condensed milk , that was for the tea afterwards) , the normal fruit spoon leaves little or no mark on the forehead. A dessert spoon with leave a trace but as the blow is spread over a wider area, the resulting bruise will have traces of blue but mostly a red afterglow. The teaspoon is for kids. The soup spoon of course with its heavier weight concentrated on a small surface area, delivers an excellent blow resounding as a thwack, and the resulting bruise will be a nice dark shade of blue in the middle fading to crimson red on the outside. For those that wish to test this theory I recommend excercising it in the privacy of your own home, as the shop would not be the wisest of test grounds. Hope it helps.

Re: Soup Spoons [and other things "missing" in Switzerland]

This thread is useless without pics.

STOP THE PRESS!!

It turns out there is a EFer who, without mentioning names but he comes from Wollishofen, who has stolen all the soup spoons in Switzerland. I have proof.

Just look how happy he is that he found another soup spoon.

But in my dictionary, a bowl is translated as a "Schüssel" and the thing you eat the soup from is mentioned as a soup-plate ?? That the word tureen is better than bowl for the stuff however makes sense.

Or is the answer that the USA is neither a British Dominion nor a member of the Commonwealth ?
