I'd go with what Nil said.

Because we all know she is always right!

Good neighbourly relationships can be wrecked easily, especially if you start out on the wrong foot.
Fix that for ya!

Joke aside. We were very understanding to the guy to enjoy his charcoal BBQ (even if in the house rules it was forbitted, yaaaa!) as long as he was enough decent and put it away from the building and not directly under the balconies.... He played the Jerk card, lost his BBQ.

Moral of the day: Be nice to people, they'll be nice too. Be a jerk to nice people, they'll cut your BBQ off!

Re: Smoking Barbecues on Balconies - What are the rules in CH

Started a BBQ on my second floor balcony once and ended up with 3 large firetrucks surounding the house with a brigade of firemen storming through my apartment to see what was cooking..!

There was a drunk sitting on a park bench across the street who thought our building was fully engulfed. He called the fire department and then proceeded to ring all the door bells from downstairs while screaming FIRE..! FIRE..! FIRE..!

I was worried I had broken some Swiss law and would have to pay a fine but the fire chief said I hadn't. He was more annoyed with the drunk who called it in.

It was by far the most embarrassing BBQ I ever had

I now use a gas grill..

Similar happened to me (back in your part of the world) - Beach of the King (PdR - Inglewood by the sea).
The area where I lived was right by the Ocean and known as "The Jungle" because it was quite a tangle of houses and walk only "streets" and back allies, with plenty of palm tree type vegetation in all the yards.

I had deliberately lightly soaked some firewood in water and placed it on top of the hot coals, in order to smoke some meat - Weber kettle grill with lid on. But I'd over wet the wood and the whole front yard was full of nice grey wood smoke, even with the lid - but as soon as I took it off to look, it was smoking like a bush fire (all the houses were predominantly made of wood too).

A short while later a fire truck was slowly cruising the neighbourhood looking for the source of the smoke. Nobody (fire dept. or neighbours) ever directly said anything to me, but I'm pretty sure someone had raised the alarm because of my smoke.

GAAAAAAAH! We were just about to go out this weekend and purchase a charcoal bbq after squabbling over which is the best model!!

Didnt give it too much thought and realise that it comes with so many issues - smoke, soot etc. Having read this thread, especially vwild's post (I am on the 3rd floor balcony with someone else above me), I'd most likely have to switch to a gas one now, which doesnt taste as nice!! I AM SO PISSIN MAD!!!! I WANT THAT CHARCOAL BBQ!

Must say a charcoal BBQ is just not suitable for a balcony. The worst is the smell of the firelighters which really give me a headache and make me feel sick. We've had that problem with neighbours below us at our flat in the UK - and when it's hot and windows need to be opened to get the air moving, it is just not pleasant. Sorry.

Why not use the straw firelighters which have been soaked in wax. No bad smells. Available at Migro or CooP. btw. Man has always cooked with fire, so whats the problem. The neighbours would be more concerned watching you eati a raw cow on the balcony.

I can't see what my neighbors are eating but I've surely had an apartment full of lighter fumes and charcoal smoke a few times this year.

They can eat all the raw cow they like - as long as I can breathe.

Ok, I bit the bullet and got a charcoal BBQ

Used it quite a bit over the summer - even had a EuroVision party with it and thankfully the neighbours have been nothing but cool about us using it. Or maybe its because I extended an invite to them to join us.

I suppose if its not too regular, like every other day, it should be fine.

I'd be careful with that. I've heard a story about couple who invited their neighbours to a party.

The neighbours came, enjoyed themselves and left at ten, shortly before calling the police.

or Not sure which, to be honest.

We have a roof terrace but can't have loud guests out there after 10pm. You couldn't really call it an "entertaining terrace" like they do back home

Our neighbour has a wooden fireplace/grill in his garden that stinks up the whole neighbourhood. We have to close all the windows on his side or our place fills with smoke

Just a word of advise. Never move to Australia. It wont be the BBQ you smell burning.
