Re: "My best friend just got deported"

Just to add to the general discussion on immigration rather that this specific case, I came across this during the week:

http://www.adamsmith.org/blog/intern...ake-us-poorer/

It's from the Adam Smith institute a right-wing/libertarian socio-economic think tank. No bleeding hearts in there. Yet they advocate immigration an economic grounds.

Also an interesting argument that immigrants repatriating money to their home countries is more effective than aid.

So your mind made up the fact that they had a child because of their asylum status and now you're following your logic to nowhere?!
I changed the text to what is relevant to this thread, my previous text i was thinking more of the situation in the UK where having a child seems a strategy that you use be able to stay in the UK.

Why has this touched your nerve so much that your response was so aggressive? Its a serious question from me not leading or provoking I hope.

This thread has touched one or two of my often hidden nerves!

Thanks, it was rather the assumption (that you now cleared up) that got to me..
Cheers

Re: "My best friend just got deported"

On a positive note.

My daughter's class had begun to divide into cliques, and there was a bit of nastiness between the various groups, talking about foreigners and along other lines.

The girl has two close friends in the class, (one is my daughter). The other was ill on the day that it all happened. When she went to the class the next day, she got hugs from all the other girls, and one of the boys said, rather gruffly. "We're all the same. We're all the same". All the other boys agreed. These events have shocked them into realising their common humanity. I hope they don't forget!

Re: "My best friend just got deported"

On a supremely positive note:

The family have been given leave to stay in Germany, and the Swiss authorities have also said they can live in CH if they prefer. They've opted for Germany as it has been their home for 20 years!

Compassion and understanding has prevailed.

I'll now start a new thread. "My best friend just emigrated!"

That is sad indeed...Once people are integrated in here, it is really hard to do that...

Hopefully their home in Germany isn't too far away so your daughter can visit sometimes.

Great news!

Re: "My best friend just got deported"

The most tragic example of a deportation, which still haunts me after 8 years, is the case of a 27 year old Turkish Kurdish woman and her Libyan husband.

The woman had left her home in Kurdistan at the age of 12 and lived with her family as refugees in Germany for 10 years. After 10 years they had to leave Germany and went to Holland to apply for asylum there. Whilst in Holland she met her Libyan refugee husband and because her family did not approve of the relationship they married secretly in a mosque. One year later he had to leave Holland and together they came to CH to apply for asylum - she being 6 months pregnant.

2 years later (she being pregnant a second time) and with a 2 year old son, they both got deported once again. This time however, because they could not prove that they were married, having no recognised documents, she was expected to go back to Kurdistan and he was deported back to Li bya together with the 2 year old son.

Because she had not been back to Kurdistan since her childhood, she had no connections there anymore and, being 6 months pregnant, she opted for an arranged marriage (paid) with a German Turk so that she could at least stay in Europe.

I often think of the family and wonder what happened to the father and son and also of the woman forced into a marriage of convenience.

Yes, the Swiss authoriies are very unyielding.
