Let's just say; non-Swiss are not that fussy about decor or Feng-Shui...

After thoroughly trawling through the 'for sale' forums recently on EF looking for some oddities I would like to purchase second hand (for a change), I realised, not everyone has the excuse that they are moving, and therefore I assume, live in what could be best described as 'tips' ..

Nor, I notice, are there many who practice Feng-Shui (so many beds opposite doors, sofa's against walls, etc). Whereas, many Swiss homes I have had the pleasure of being invited to are, well, just beautiful and thought about (Feng-Shui wise)...

Don't get me wrong, I don't live in a polished Palace (and you may also find the odd sock in an odd place or dog hair under the sofa) but I could describe my place as clean and thought about (Feng-Shui wise), could you?

Gone are the days for all of us (I think) of horrible old MDF furniture, big cushioned sofas and shag pile (Eastenders style deco) but... there are some (it seems), who never really thought about it in terms of interior deco (and IKEA furniture is horrible when it ages). Your views please.

Does anyone have an Air Rifle for sale by any chance?

Nope. May eventually (briefly) be the former, will never be the latter unless by accident.

(Just out of curiosity, where does Feng-Shui permit one to stack one's great big stacks of yet-to-unpack boxes? I wouldn't want to prevent the Dragon from coming through the Notch in the Mountain to liaise with the Sea Tiger or anything similarly catastrophic.)

I place my furniture based on what flows, what makes sense and how the room will look. And oh, where the power sockets are!!!

The bed is facing the door, but its only because if I place it the other way, the room looks funny. I choose practicality over fengshui any day - and I am Asian!!!

Well I had them in a sort of stockade arrangement (I've always wanted one) with loopholes and everything, but then we had guests and needed to be able to open the door to that room. So now they are just sort of stacked on top of each other. No loopholes no pyramids no crystal lattices. Is that OK?

It's nice that so many people have appartments with enough space to keep the sofas away from the walls.

I'll not comment on the for sale section of this forum, but I just assume most people are buying the stuff they're buying because they figure they'll only be here a year or so. Either that, or they're blind.

I still have a hideous coffee table at home, but only because I can't find a sufficiently nice one here for less than 5,000CHF.

I always thought Feng Shui was a martial art. So if you encounter a mugger you shout "take one step closer pal, and I'll rearrange your furniture!"

Cheers,
Nick

My brief flirtation with Feng Shui For The Expat Home ended when four of the eight goldfish in my acquarium died.

Yet somehow we managed to live happily ever after.

?

I'd say I am more on the side that I am missing an extra room - so the sofa in the middle separates the living and the dining area...

Depends,

Do you feel like your soul is disturbed right now? Do you feel different? Can you sleep? Depending of their angles, you should be careful to your fertility level!

I will always be sceptical about effectiveness of Feng Shui till the day I see someone performing Hadouken move in real life.

OMG!

Is this a requirement... no wonder it takes so long to get integrated...

The only things I know about Feng-Shui are:

1) put the toilet lid down (prevents flushing money away)

2) have an aquarium in your entrance (takes away the negative chi... or whatever)

Well, I have Lillian Too's Feng Shui book, sadly I do not have her budget for space, so the bed goes where it makes most sense from a space usage point of view.

I turn the fan on for wind, and the tap for water. Feng shui sorted.

Lies, damn lies and Statistics, and then there is Feng Shui.

Its not a question of Swiss Vs non-Swiss but people with too much time and money at their hand Vs those who dont.

Even the civilised and educated people need a bit of superstition in their life.

Ofcourse you can, just strip the place of all furniture and draw some odd lines abstract figures here and there and call it Renaissance. If anyone complaisn just say "Dont you know this is the Chinese art post Mongolian invasion"

What would be really funny is to go to someone's house who is seriously into Feng Shui and to start spasmping at odd intervals while there and say "Gosh, I am feeling these bursts of energy inside me"

Even better if you can fake the Highlander style Quickening!

Or clean table and floor surfaces, do the washing-up and throw out all the old crap.

Re: Let's just say; non-Swiss are not that fussy about decor or Feng-Shui...

We were visiting a temple in Singapore and our guide, when pressed on Feng Shui, replied that you can lay furniture in whichever Feng Shui arrangement you like but if it is full of nails it means nothing. Nails are not part of Feng Shui.

This, apparently, makes him smile about Westernised Feng Shui...
