It stinks in Basel - Flowering Titan Arum

The Titan Arum started to smell. It is the biggest flower of the world. The one in Basel is nearly 2 meters.

For more about this huge flower see Wikipedia reference-linkAmorphophallus titanum.

For this type of information I tend to go straight to Wikipedia (Firefox treats it as a "search engine"), bypassing the mighty

It looks like its about to bloom any moment now. Cant believe i actually find myself checking the webcam every half hour or so. Who would have thought a stinking phallos could be so exiting :-)

It looks like a giant baguette. I hope Jacques doesn't see it as he's cycling home drunk tonight and wants to make a sandwich.

Re: It stinks in Basel - Flowering Titan Arum

Don't get me started on Basel...No offense intended, but around me, I always smell some ethnic food be it Turkish or Balkanic -or volcanic ?? It smells like a very strong combination of spices & onions & garlic and it gets into my bedroom...it prevents me from sleeping ;( and my clothes smell like it too.

And next time someone says Basel is a boring place to live, we can all reminesce about the exciting weekend when we all watched a flower bloom.

Interesting to see all these people around coming after 10pm admiring the flower like in a religious fervour.

Not at all like that. It's just that it is the most interesting thing that is happening in Basel right now. Actually, it was quite fun seeing the gardens at night time.

The Botanical Gardens might struggle to convince people to pay to see a once-in-75-years event every eighteen months...
