TO-DOs once I set foot on Zurich

Hi there

I'd like you guys to tell me if I'm missing something in this list of TO-DOs once I get to Zurich and if the order is correct or if I should do something before something else.

1. Get Swiss mobile. DONE

2. Find a job. DONE

3. Find temporal apartment accommodation. DONE, although I've been able to rent only one week in one of these "business apartments", expensive but at least cheaper than a hotel. I need to extend this at least one month more.

4. Register at my local Kreisburo ??. I'm not sure how to do this and what papers I need to present. I'll be only one week in city center and then I might or not be moving somewhere else. It's quite likely I'll stay in the same apartment for one or two month. Any advice/suggestion/comment in relation to this point ?

5. Open a bank account. Could you guys recommend any bank and what I need to present ?

6. Get health insurance. Any suggestion about which one to get ?

For the moment these are the main points I have in my list but I'm sure I'm missing many others.

Thanks in advance

Fran

Re: TO-DOs once I set foot on Zurich

Hi Fran,
That`s a pretty good start!
For registering at the local Gemiendehaus you need to take your passport, details of where you are living (preferably a copy of a rental agreement - therefore I would wait a week or so to see where you are going to be for the next few weeks/months), a copy of your employment contract and also a couple of official sized passport photos.
It would be a good idea to take copies of passport etc in advance, that sves them the trouble of doing it and gives you immediate brownie points.
Regarding the bank account and Health Insurance, there are plenty of excellent (if somewhat long - mainly because the questions have been asked so many times before) threads on this Forum - best to use the search function.
The Health Insurance is most important as it is payable from your date of arrival in Switzerland.
There is a good website for this www.comparis.ch (web site is available in English also!)
Don`t forget - take copies of everything for your own records.
I`m sure that you will get loads more info from people who have been here much longer than me - but for what it`s worth, I found it all pretty painless.
After that - you just need to get out and meet people!
Good luck anyway. Cheers,
Basher.

Re: TO-DOs once I set foot on Zurich

A note on health insurance: pm a fellow EF member, Jenny. She is very knowledgeble in that aspect and can advise you accordingly if comparis.ch doesnt come up with anything.

Banking wise, was painless - we are with Credit Suisse and they've been very helpful. Show up with your passport/permit, and employment contract - took less than 30 minutes all in all.

You seem pretty organised. Another thing is transportation. Check out sbb for the various options to determine if you need the GA (the yearly pass which covers travel around Switzerland), or simply the halbtax or Zone 10 one. Smaller details like getting the right trash bag, (the zurisack) can be purchased from your local supermarket counters. Dont do what we did - werent aware of the rules, and bought the usual black bin bags only to get told off at our business apartment.

Welcome in advance!

You can check it online too
http://www.zvv.ch/en/tickets/tickets...ces/index.html

Do remember to have some passport sized photos handy for these admin matters - you'll need it for your permit, travel cards etc.

Look into getting also the following insurances:

Haftpflichtversicherung (insurance to cover damaging things)
Hausrat versicherung
Privat rechschutzversicherung (legal rights insurance, this one is optional but very useful in switzerland with naggy neighbours, uptight officials and sometimes unreasonable workplaces...)
