Bird droppings on balcony (large amounts of)

We were peacefully sat on the balcony Saturday just gone and heard what sounded like a lot of drops of water suddenly landing close by, as if coming from a mis-guided garden sprinkler. Thought no more of it. Then an awful smell appeared and we noticed that the drops of water were not water, but had dried out to form white powdery spots, some about 5mm in diameter, diagonally across the balcony, over a two meter distance and stopped just inside the neighbours balcony. There were really hundreds of them. The direction of fall was vertical, judging by the drops and dribbles on the backs of the chairs. And the smell was foul, intoxicating. We had to escape from the balcony (also not knowing what the residue was). No kids around, no neigbours, no-one lives above us. (we live on the edge of the village overlooking the river Reuss)

It eventually took an hour to clean the balcony of the intoxicating drops; even had to clean the sunshade and windows (which were covered).

We discounted aeroplane droppings, as such material, we guessed, would disperse over a much wider area than two square meters.

But the smell made us concerned as to what the drops were.

The only thing we can think of is that it was a bird - but I would guess it would have to be a bloody big bird !

Has anyone else experienced such a 'bird dropping shower/deluge' ?

Comments from twitchers welcome !

Cheers !

In any event be VERY CAREFUL when you do the clean up. Wear gloves and a mask. Do not get any of it on exposed skin. Be sure to disinfect well after the clean up (use a strong bleach?).

Pigeon droppings carry a very dreadful disease.

Link to a recent case in Canada.

Re: Bird droppings on balcony (large amounts of)

In Lyme Regis UK, I was sitting in my car with the window open. A seagull bombed my car and the car in front of me in one swoop! I still have stains on the map I was reading inside the car!

The other driver and I agreed he must have had a bad curry from the night before.
