Collected a few years ago a nice little tree that's improving my dad's garden since that time.

Oh, I never realised that all the trees out there on the streets were dumped. Great! I'll add that to my business of selling all those cars I've been finding.

Not to mention all the real estate that I've been selling.

In my corner of the street, it goes like this.
People put everything out in the street, normally in the evening,
one or two small vans are already there stationned, vans with French plates, not too far away, to pick up almost all of it.
(I don't know who they are though, they like appear out of nowhere and disappear again.)
Very discreetly done. They probably can sell it all elsewhere.

If you ever need replacement glass or mirrors, go to the dumps and pick up some for free. Bring your gloves, glass cutter and sanding block for the sharp edges.

What am I doing wrong?

Absolutely they sell it at the brocantes. I was talking to the guys at the dump and he says there are turf wars over the best neighborhoods and that you should be careful. There have been fights, like, real fights! He also told me, IIRC, that it's illegal to pick the stuff up from the street.

I'd be worried about identity theft. Isn't it people from france casing neighborhoods and burgling good Swiss residents?

So, if I'm looking to get rid of a brown sofa sleeper (which could have more comfortable backing) in Basel, I should just set it out on the street and it will probably eventually disappear?

Last year, you'd wait for the official quarterly throw-out day and dump it in the street.

Now that they don't have throw-out days you put it in the street with a "gratis" sticker on it and hope for the best. Assuming no-one takes it, you then need to dispose of it yourself unfortunately.

Once found a 10 Franc note in Bern and said enthusiastically "dessert's on me!!"
