The strangest thing.....

I'm a well travelled person, have lived and worked in the UK, US, Oz, Japan, Denmark and CH. But yesterday experienced a real first!

I was travelling with some work colleagues to Visp from Basel on the train. We were, I confess, quite loud. 2 Germans, a frenchman and myself (British). We were laughing, joking and generally in good spirits.

Approaching Bern a well dressed gentleman approached us and handed over a 200chf note and asked us to keep the noise down - he then walked downstairs to talk on his phone.

We were certainly stunned into silence! And left the bill on the table wondering what to do. When the chap returned my colleague asked him very nicely what the money was for and he was quite charming and said something along the lines of wanting to "sponsor" our laughter. He then said something along the lines of - just don't tell that I did this. Possibly he was someone well known in CH - but none of us knew who he was.

So we ended up keeping the money and treating ourselves to a lovely slap up lunch in Visp. Quite astonishing CH train story really.

Re: The strangest thing.....

It was a gracious act on his part. He broached an awkward subject in a way that you couldn't really take offense. He probably had loads of money, and isn't it typically Swiss to throw lots of money at something to effect a solution ?

"We were certainly stunned into silence!"

I imagine he was VERY nice since you were probably in one of the QUIET cars where you are only supposed to whisper.

Frankly, it might have been an idea to give the CHF 200 to a worthy charity. But to each his own.

Re: The strangest thing.....

Dear Verbier, we definitely weren't in the quiet car - we checked! We actually spent the money on our staff (included in the ourselves remark!) (as we were on a work visit) we bought wine/cheese all round.

Re: The strangest thing.....

That's a great story! If he is sponsoring the laughter then may be he liked it so much because he lacked it in his life.

It's much better than the guy who reprmanded us when we had just boarded the quiet cabin and me and my friend were whispering, hardly hearing each other when this guy approached and showed us the SILENCE sign and told us to shut up. We felt like 2 kids who did not know what we did wrong after we had behaved so good and grabbed our stuff and moved to the loud cabin and lived happily ever after..

Sounds more like he was attempting to buy some quiet - under the diplomatic guise of sponsoring your laughter.

With, this one story, I can imagine that all train journeys involving EF readers, have all of a sudden become much noisier - in the hope of a free lunch.

For 200CHF? Sorry, I refuse to believe it.
