A bit peeved. Strange behaviour from a Zurich tram driver.

So, tonight I stayed a bit late at the Viadukt to enjoy drinks and chat with the lovely Gata and her very lucky fiancée who were in town for the night. I was in a hurry to leave as my train connections late in the evening are pretty tight.

As I left the side staff entrance from the market I could see a tram just pulling into the Damweg stop, I could also see that it was chucking it down and I didn't have a jacket, with my white linen shirt it was clear that soon I was going to be an entry in some obscure Red Neck Wet T-shirt competition. I had to catch this tram or I risked missing the fast train from the HB to the sticks.

I ran like the clappers through the downpour, pausing only slightly to dash across the east bound lane of Limmatstrasse onto the tram stop island. The driver could clearly see me, and see that I was wet (and getting wetter) and that I was in a major hurry. Can you believe what he did next?

The driver actually pressed a button in his cab to open the front doors (only the front doors mind, nearest to my approach) so I could run into the tram without having to thumb the door entry button repeatedly in the pouring rain.

I did manage to wave, and grin, a very brief thanks to him before diving into the dry sanctuary of a number 13 tram.

What really peeved me though, is that during my mad aquatic dash I was already formulating an EF complaint about rude, jobsworth tram drivers and here I was, safe, and almost dry, and slightly confused. I mean, I know from reading EF that Swiss people are rude, and Zurich public transport employees are even ruder and would refuse to bend the rules even slightly to help a customer in (soggy) distress. Really, what should I do? At the moment I'm thinking of getting my wife to write a firmly worded letter of complaint to the Zurich tram boss, complaining that her husband didn't actually get an opportunity to complain on EF about his employees bad behaviour.

Please help me, really, what should I do now?

Can you remember the exact time of the tram? Go to the ZVV depot and leave him a sample of your cheeses. This mad behaviour must be really encouraged!

You shouldn´t believe all what you read...

No, seriously, that´s not my experience (rudeness part). Clearly they do not wait again and again for each passenger that wants to sneak in, or they won´t be able to be on time Let´s be honest, they stick to their rules, which sometimes is quite annoying for the ones arriving 10 seconds later than the train departure time. But that is what Switzerland is about.

Re: A bit peeved. Strange behaviour from a Zurich tram driver.

When I used to take trams in Basel I noticed that behaviour regularly.

Such a simple thing, but really cheered me up once as I was stuck at the lights, hopping from foot to foot, trying to cross the road to catch a tram. And the driver just waited, smiling at me, until (being all well behaved, what with him staring at me!) the green man lit and I legged it into the tram.

Re: A bit peeved. Strange behaviour from a Zurich tram driver.

I have it on good authority that CCTV from the tram and the stop have been analysed and the synthetic shirt-wearing offender has been sacked for causing a 13-second delay to his tram and thus 14211 seconds delay in total to the whole tram system in Zurich.

You can see his complaint on www.tramdriverforum.ch as we speak

Re: A bit peeved. Strange behaviour from a Zurich tram driver.

Reminds me of the time my husband came home super-annoyed that some woman had yelled at him when he was trying to park the car in the local shopping centre...

He was parking our rather large sedan into the 'parents with prams' space...

The lady was quite rude...he just calmly ignored her, parked the car, and retrieved our brand new baby from the baby seat in the back...solo dad outing...

He was greatly annoyed that she was so *extremely* apologetic....that was the worst bit...he really couldn't justify having a go at her, so he continued with his calm demeanour and went on his way...

Re: A bit peeved. Strange behaviour from a Zurich tram driver.

Wow .. you REALY must be obviously an Auslander!

Like me! In the olden days before they closed down all the bahnhof ticket offices, I bought my first train ticket, to go attend my first German language lessons, and made sure I was heading for the correct platform.

Because I figured out the train still had another 10 minutes before departure time (we`re at the last stop, like I`ve mentioned before somewhere here) ... I wanted to have a smoke before boarding, and asked (tried asking) what looked like a train worker guy, if I was at the right train.....

Over the loudspeakers came a voice, from the ticket guy in his office "YES! GET ON THAT TRAIN" .....(in English) ....... So I ended up sitting, smokeless, in that train for 10 minutes before it headed out.

They realy care about the public here, don`t they?

Hard cheese old fellow... We got wet, but in the continued lovely company of Gata and Simon. It was your Sudwerk Ales that forced me into this position...

Make mine a double.

Plausible premise but lacking a certain squishy emotional quality that makes the reader want to empathize or expectorate, depending. 6/10.

Pah. In Basel, the tram driver would have driven over to pick you up.

Low standards you Zurich EFers.
