I think in my opinion the best place is amazon.com where you can get your accessories as a bundle for a slightly cheaper price. Nothing like buying a product directly from the vendor.

My Husband bought one for my birthday a few weeks ago direct from Amazon.com. It's GREAT! and so easy to download/pay for books!! It's so easy to use, I'd recommend it whole heartedly - enjoy x

I had an interesting experience recently. I bought someone an amazon gift certificate, so that they could buy more books for their kindle, but it seems that whatever amazon site your kindle is registered to, (as in where you first bought it) that is the only site from which you can buy books.

I don't have one but had a look at someone's, he was sitting by the pool reading and it was no problem at all even though it was quite bright out.

Re: Where to buy Amazon Kindle in Zurich

Hey guys, am planning to get a kindle from Amazon.

In fact its in my shopping basket right now - just a rather silly question about the plug/charger: wont be any problem using it in Switzerland if I got it from the either US/UK Amazon right?

Cheers

i've had two kindles, both of them are now broken (apparently you need to charge them at a regular basis, if you don't the screen gets some kind of distortion).
WTF?

Recently I picked up an ipad 1 for 429 CHF, never been happier. i'm much more satisfied with it than i ever was with the kindles (even before they broke).
Different tools for different jobs. Battery life on iPad is a joke if using as an eBook.

There is no backlighting and the e-ink screen gets better under strong light unlike a computer or iPad. It is great for reading under practically any lighting conditions with no extra strain in the eyes than paper...You can even resize and choose the fonts that you find easiest to read.

Colin, did you get yours from the UK/US site? UK and US plugs are completely different from the Swiss ones so am a little hesitant. Was wondering if I should just head down to Digitec to save me the hassle.

Also, am contemplating between the 3G or non 3G version. What are your thoughts?

They all charge from USB standard so it does not matter. The US plug will most probably come with an option or two but really you can charge them from your computer if you really want.

I got mine from the UK site but broke it by sitting on it and will get a replacement through the US site.

I always go for the WiFi only as I have WiFi at home and generally when travelling it is available somewhere or other so that you can buy books. It is only those people that use it a lot for news (whom I don't know many of) that really need the 3G.

The Kindle electrical-socket plug comes apart so that you can simply plug it into the usb socket of your computer at one end and the Kindle socket at the other.
At least that what I can do with mine.

Re: Where to buy Amazon Kindle in Zurich

I would also buy it direct from Amazon.com - probably cheapest and you can get all the nice add-ons. I would buy a case for it as it might otherwise get more easily damaged. I also have the little lamp you can put on the side which is great - especially for traveling.

As far as plugs go: You can either plug it into the computer to load or I use an international adapter to plug it into an electrical socket. I think the one I use I once bought at the airport.

Thanks Nina. Done and done Treated myself to one of Amazon's swanky covers with a light as well! The only semi-whinge I have is that they dont have the white kindle available outside the US to ship here. MEH.

Still, no more having to worry about filling the house with books and getting rid of them when we move!

Re: Where to buy Amazon Kindle in Zurich

Looks like the new colour Kindle with touch features may will be out as soon as October, so may be an idea to hold off buying one with the new model literally a month or so away! http://www.techreg.com/

Aldo here http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/1796...ted-kindle.htm

Im deifnitely going to hold off and see what it brings.

Looks pretty deinfite it will have a full colour screen, now that e-ink have got one out http://www.eink.com/display_products_triton.html

Quote:
Enhanced With Color

In addition to 16 levels of monochrome, Triton is capable of displaying thousands of colors. For image-rich information applications showing charts, graphs, maps, photos, comics and advertising, color displays made with Triton Imaging Film enable ultra low power and high mobility devices with a paper-like experience. And just like E Ink's monochrome ePaper products, Triton's crisp text and detailed color graphics are fully viewable in direct sunlight.
Improved Speed

Both E Ink Triton as well as E Ink Pearl, are both 20% faster than previous generations of E Ink Imaging Film. Whether turning a page, selecting a menu, taking notes, or viewing an animation, Triton's update performance will satisfy today's user-interface product needs. This expands the ePaper experience and display more dynamic content for signage, advertising, or browsing the Internet.
It really would be crazy not to wait for this, full colour would make it much better, and the touchscreen would get rid of the physical keyboard and allow for a bigger screen. Can't wait!

Re: Where to buy Amazon Kindle in Zurich

I have had my Kindle for 8 months and I love it. I bought the 3G version because I tend to read more when I go on holiday and I don't necessarily want to pay hotel prices for Wireless connectivity when it's time to get a new book, especially if I've received a great recommendation from someone on my trip.

I do have a couple of subscriptions (newspaper and fortnightly current affairs mag) but only turn 3G and wireless on when I need the downloads, otherwise I keep them off and my battery life is great.

I also have a leather cover bought from Amazon signficantly cheaper than the official Kindle one and it works great, and also significantly cheaper than the one with light. However last week or the week before, Tchibo stores had small clip on lights for books and I bought one for use when it is super dark. I have tried it out and works a treat especially as I clip it on only when needed and take it off again when done reading so no damage.....so far.

I do have the kindle app for my Ipad but prefer how the kindle doesn't have a back light and it really is like reading a book.

Incidentally, regarding the power cable, the Kindle and Blackberry have compatible power cables - bonus for me as I bought my Kindle in the UK so have the UK plug BUT I have a Blackberry bought in Switzerland so am already set for a reasonable amount of travel.

Personally, I would hold on for the colour version as mentioned earlier and buy directly from Amazon.

Feck. Typical. I switched to the iphone4 recently and learnt that the iphone5 is coming out in Sept/Oct. Ordered the kindle on Fri and read this today.

Note to self: stop being so lazy and do more research.

Relax, take a deep breath and don't do anything silly. These are two very very very small gossip sites. None of the major tech sites are anticipating a quick launch and even then the device you have bought is the best value for money e-book around and you will love it for years and years.

Don't get caught in the colour screen touchy feely hype on this upgrade. Enjoy reading your fiction and wait till it all blows over. You have done the right thing.

I think you will find that one of the quotes on the "small gossip sites" was directly from Amazon themselves regarding the release dates.

They have confirmed it is due in the next month or two, and a colour screen is the logica choice as the tech is now ready for use, as per the link I gave.

It is a given that one is due out very shortly, and logical to assume it will use the new technology. I would personally not buy a version 3 now when it is the crossover point to a new version.
