No one speaks english in Bern

Its been 2 weeks in bern and now its driving me Super Crazy.

there is not even a single person i have met speaks who speaks English. If you approach to anyone they might answer what u ask them but don't expect anything more then that.

At times I just think that i am the only one who doesn't know german. rest everyone is just born with it.

Have been trying to find a job and I believe this is thee most difficult country i have been for traveling and for finding a job too.

Welcome to the forum and to Bern

If you are traveling, what brought you to Bern in the first place? Some other areas are deffo easier to integrate into...

Re: No one speaks english in Bern

i have been living in bern almost 4 years and in my experience everyone speaks english (if you ignore the "a little bit" reply you normally get when you asked--usually this translates to "fluently and certainly better than you do german" :P)

funny how people have different experiences in the same town!

It's Bern, not Star Trek, not everyone speaks English, nor do they German for that matter.

To be honest, if this is how you feel now as a fresh arrival it's pretty unlikely you're going to succeed in living and working in Bern.

Hey! Leave the OP alone. I mean s/he's gotta have style. Just look at the way s/he's combined surprise with irony and a smidgen of incredulity that not only does no one but no one speak English, to top it all s/he can't speak German and can't get a job. And s/he's been looking for like, you know, ever...

Stick with it,you will be fine. Once you have completed a full recce of Bern you will be shocked by how many people do speak English.

"dis peitsch is not äveiläbäl in inglisch.

pliis tscheinsch tu dä tschörmän peitsch.

This is very true! We used to visit Bern often-ish. And I found that more people spoke English than French, but by a long way.

Do you understand English? Because I found Bern a bit different where many people speak English.
Try to join some English speaking group and also to EF events, you will get to know the number of people speaking English.

Enjoy your stay and Have a nice time

My wife works in Bern and she and most of her colleagues speak very good English - you obviously haven't bumped into them yet.

Actually, I know you meant it as a joke, but it could be the OPs accent that is difficult for people to understand. It's not one that is very common for the Swiss to hear.

Maybe s/he needs to try to speak with a more neutral accent, clearly & slowly.

Re: No one speaks english in Bern

Incredulation indeed, lol

Yes, I get very cross when some people look at me with that 'what did he say' look, when my English OH speaks in his very clear and almost perfect French, but with a British accent. Mind you, it is the same all over the world, not just here in CH. As an ex-teacher, I have learnt to project my voice- but he has always worked on a one to one or small group basis, and it is true that some people find him difficult to hear, even in English. We had the same problem in Italy last couple of weeks - but we just soldier on, rather than switch to English. And in the part of Tuscany we go to, in the South-East which is not touristy at all, nobody speaks English so we have no choice. If you are going to live somewhere, let alone just go on hols from time to time- just get on with it and learn- it's great fun actually. Good luck.

It just feels that way. A pretty large proportion of the population of Bern also had to learn German from scratch.

First, get a phrase book and use it. Then get some German language books (or, if you can afford it and have the motivation, go on a course). Learn a bit of German, then learn a bit more.

Eventually, you will give newcomers the impression that you were "just born with it" too.

Good luck!

I felt like that too after moving from ZH to Langenthal.
Zurich was fine, Bern Oberland was a challenge regarding communication.
I felt really shy in my own country.
Take Swiss German classes at the Migros school, it really does help !
People are nice though so after a while you do manage to get around.

I've been here for years and still can't speak fluent German because everyone speaks English! In a way would like more total immersion in the 'foreign' language.
