If he genuinely has lost his wallet then he'll have to ask several people because 50 CHF of petrol won't get him home will it. Giving someone money because they ask for it isn't really a scam in my opinion.
Did you read the article? Quite a lot of people have given him much more than 50.00 and he wanted more from my ex but she started getting suspicious about his stories.

In the article one guy guessed it was a scam and told him he didn't have any cash with him but asked him to follow him to his village post office where he would get some. On the way he called the police but at the PO Moloney smelt a trap and ran back to his car and drove off. The police arrived a few minutes later.

Re: Scam? Woman "lost" tickets, stuck, etc.

Yesterday I saw at least two 'roma'-type looking women working the commuting crowd in Altstetten.

I'm used to seeing this practice in touristy areas in France and Spain---but the first time I saw it in Zurich.

Since there was more than one, and doing the same thing, I can only assume they had some 'pimp' type organizing the whole affair.

I find this to be an effective tactic with most money requests. If you offer to pay for the gas or food directly, a lot of them will walk away. I've even offered to bring back a sandwich and bottle of water to the folks on the street in Bern and they say no they just want the money.

I've done that at service stations in France when (usually a Brit) tells me he's had his wallet stolen and can I help him with some cash for gas. I tell him to put 30 Euros of gas in his car and I'll pay with a car. They always disappear as they don't want you to see their reg plate (and don't want gas anyway, just cash)

There is an office at some trainstations, that offers help in case you're stranded. At Zurich HB, the office is on the first level down the escalator right next to the toilets.
I think the word is Bahnhofsmission,

It may sound a bit religious but actually it's just about helping people..

The same happened to me once and I was in a pretty good mood that day, I told the guy 'don't worry I will go with you to the station and buy the ticket'.

The guy said 'never mind' and walked away
Happened to me when I was walking hom from the Coop one day. A man came to me and said he was hungry and so were his wife and children. I opened my bag of apples and said he could take as many as he wanted. He said I can't eat apples as I have bad teeth. Please give me money. I said, well, take some for your children. He said, no, we all have bad teeth in our family.
