A friend told me about this Oerlikon story four years ago.
A female soldier in the South African army was testing an Oerlikon anti aircraft/tank gun and the thing malfunctioned and went out of control autofiring, killing nine and injring fifteen other soldiers. Sounded horrific (something like the prototype in the board room in Robocop movie).
Reminds me of the lady in court who was charged with murdering her husband with an electric carving knife.

The prosecutor asked why she stabbed him 72 times.
Answer "I could not find out how to turn it off"

Re: Oerlikons

Yeah, those bloody Oerlikons apparently had some software glitches and safety mechanism failed: http://m.wired.com/dangerroom/2007/10/robot-cannon-ki/

And other Oerlikons board the train near the airport

Re: Oerlikons

Has anybody found a follow-up report on that? Just curious, as I could not find any reports after early 2008...

Beside the point that Oerlikon-Contraves would call back any faulty product, these customers forgot the two basic rules about Oerlikon-Contraves .......

Reminds me of the woman who threw her husband out of the window, and when asked why she did do so she stated that she had been reading the journal "Schöner Wohnen" (living more nicely)

Indeed they did forget about the history - there's an interesting reading here:

But I meant THESE rules
1) Bührle-Oerlikon-Contraves is always right
2) If they are making a mistake it is the fault of the customer

and you never are sure whether those "strangers" when visiting Bern will ask about the whereabouts of the Swiss Queen
He's in Zurich, I accidentally made eye contact in cafe odeon into which I had strayed unwittingly

Anyway, Oerlikon is now german. Would one of these fit on my balcony, in the event of a zombie invasion? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfyNz2I02Vs

Difficult to tell from that whether they're any good. I mean, the sea's a pretty big target, and hard to miss. My five year old can make splashes like that throwing stones into it
