Is it only me who doesn't panic when the stores are closed for one day more than usual?
Yes - you don't need to panic just because the shops close for one day gives you a chance to save money and do some relaxing.

In the 15 years I've lived here, stores closed on holidays has never been a problem, or even an issue. Until today, that is. And now I'm panicking...

I've just partaken of that other holiday tradition - the mad dash to the emergency vet. (Dangerous dietary indescretion. ) And...

In order to coat the nasty stuff that might have been eaten to limit damage on the way out, I need to feed the mutts mashed potatoes. As potatoes are not a staple in our house, I didn't stock up before the holiday. I have a few spuds on hand, but not enough to last until Tuesday.

Funny, the 24 hour emergency Apotheke doesn't carry potatoes. Nor does the bakery which is open on Sunday. Nor does the market at the gas station.

This is the first time in 15 years here that I might actually NEED a grocery store open on a holiday weekend.

Oy vey.

Ask your lovely neighbours () - or else here - I'm sure that must be EFers around you who will rush round with some spuds.

Come on guys - out you come with your 'tatties, please. Got some, but I am a bit far, sorry.

Thanks, Odile.

I *think* the grocery store at the Zürich HB is open on Sundays... can anyone confirm, given that Sunday is Pentecost?

the airport works for me. I think the Coop Pronto near me has potatoes. Grocery store in Waldshut is usually open until 10pm Saturday night.

It is closed, unfortunately but open on Monday. According to the migros website, the one at the airport is also closed Sunday and Monday.

But, it looks like the Migrolinos in Wadenswil and Wollerau might be open? And the Migros at Enge.

The Coop at Brunnen station or the Aperto at Arth-Goldau station should be open and much closer than Zürich HB (I am assuming you are in SZ from your profile). If you are on the Küssnacht side of SZ, the Aperto at Zug station will be open.

What did the mutt eat?
A tube of doggy liver paste. The aluminum tube, that is.

I came home to find chewed bits of metal all over the floor. I can't find all the bits to reconstruct the tube - which means some sharp pieces of metal might have been eaten.

To make things worse, I don't know who did it. I suspect Hooligan, as in her youth she was a talented thief - but the Belltie could have been in on the action as well. Haifish has no teeth and can't climb stairs, so he's in the clear.

So not knowing who did the deed, both have been to the emergency clinic. Now we are watching and waiting... and looking for potatoes.

Thanks for the suggestions one and all... I'm impressed at how many places are indeed open over the holiday weekend.

Get yourself to a motorway service station. Don't know the ones in your area, but e.g. Pratteln has a Co-Op that's open all hours which stocks plenty of fresh food and other essentials

It's Yiddish - filtered through generations of Chicago-ese.

Which reminds me - at the risk of wandering off topic - of this thread:

Yiddish and Swiss German

I am sure you have turned the house upside down looking for the pieces of the tube. If they were chewed well, maybe they won't cause problems. I will keep my thumbs pressed for you.
We also have trouble sometimes figuring out who the guilty party is, but when it comes to eating foreign objects, Abby wins hands down. Years ago she ate these two rocks. We still have no idea how she actually manage to swallow them. One came out naturally, the other not, and she had to be operated on.

Re: Pfingsten / Whit Monday June 13th - don't forget to shop by tomorrow Sat

Well, I am now the proud possessor of 4kg of potatoes and a box of Kartoffelstock to hold in reserve - courtesy of the Avec Shop at the Richterswil Bahnhof.

(Took six different stores to find potatoes - but I was pleased to see that there were six shops in the general area open today. But all's well that ends well.)

For anyone in the area, the Avec is open Sundays and holidays from 7-21:00. A small selection of fresh produce, some meat, bread, the basics - as well as the usual snacks and sundries.

FYI, the Migros and Coop Pronto at the airport are both open today and tomorrow, until 23:00. (That was plan B, as OH is flying in tomorrow morning.)

So yes, even in a panic situation, one can (eventually) find what one needs, even on Pentecost Sunday.

And, I have to say that we are soooo fortunate to have top-notch emergency veterinary care here, 24/7.

Oh, the poor thing - she must have been in so much pain!

Why oh why do our Hooverhounds do things like this?

(And why oh why do they insist on doing this in the middle of the night, on Sundays, and on holidays? )
