You mean the same Switzerland that allows illegal dumping only depending where? Dumped fridges out in the field somewhere near Plan-les-Ouates (GE) a few years ago didn't seem to bother authorities. Habits seem to be different. Adliswil then is the place to be where you get the stereotype confirmed. And the rest of swiss-german speaking Switzerland probably too

Next time, remember to rip the name/address label of anything before dumping.

After all - this is Switzerland - anonymity is king.
And that's the key for not getting caught. However, the Swiss are great at writing down license plate numbers and reporting anything suspicious so basically it's easier just to follow the rules.

Here's mine: I'd just moved to Switzerland when I picked up a package in the post with my Cablecom modem in it. As I was on my way to town by train and didn't want to carry the box all day, I took out the contents, put them in my bag, and dropped the flattened cardboard box in the bin outside the post. One week later I received an official-looking letter warning me against any more illegal dumping!

(Note: it was a smallish box, and I normally do recycle, but...)
You probably should have set the box on fire. Smoke of all varieties here seems to be worshipped. Consider:
1) The number of makeshift and permanent fire pits by the side of lakes here
2) The number of homes which burn wood for heating - even in the summer
3) The old ashtray smell wafting around any train station
4) The preponderance of smoked fish sold in the supermarkets here

Whilst disposing of postal packaging at a post office refuse point may strike an Ausländer's brain as being wholly logical I suspect here they only use the bins for disposing of the queue or line numbers dispensed by the machines in the post office to keep the baying herd in order.

People in the offices of "Die Post" tend to be more Swiss than Swiss, and are always right. How dare you to doubt their unlimited wisdom

And again, had he used a "public bin" 100 meters down the road or at the rail-station, nothing would have happened

Actually, it was a public bin - at least it looked it, in the middle of the square in front of the post. But it was funny, that's all. It is their country to do as they please in, and I'm happy to be able to live here!

Nah. The Swiss just care so much about their country, they'll go to great strides to keep as beautiful and functioning as possible.
...and then you have :

http://www.swissworld.org/en/environ...zardous_waste/

Like the Swiss I also like things to be clean and stuff, but the OP was not accused of littering but of not sorting his garbage correctly, which in the end has NO impact what so ever, so why bother with the garbage detectives...?

I guess translated in Swiss-German this t-shirt could be a best seller :-)

Natürlich it would read literally not ironically.

On second thoughts direct confrontation is almost unheard of, I bet the postcard would be the real sales winner!

Re: Only in Switzerland... (anecdotes)

Anecdote: only in Switzerland.

I paid for the "mailbox" plates with my name for a ridiculous amount- (60chf for something I could get 1chf online). Trying to comply with local culture, all that cràp.

As it is small, I asked: "first name initials" + Surname: Something like:

JP MyCoolSurname.

Of course, postmen bugged when they saw "Jean Paul MyCoolSurname" on the letters and returned them: no one found at the delivery address.

After a few comments from offices that my letters where returned, I reacted and added a nice small paper to the "plates":
JP MyCoolSurname.
Paper: Jean Paul.

2 days after it got removed. Fair enough, I never put it back.

1 Week after I received a letter from the agency warning me that it's not appropriate, blabla and threaten me with fine or to pay for the new plates, another 60chf. They attached the ordering form for the new one .

But who on earth is telling the agency about that???? someone reported me for that!!!

Believe it! It might even have been the agency inspecting for themselves (and no doubt invoicing the landlord for it at some great CHFs per hour rate).

I've said before that when we moved into our apartment the building was completely new. For a few days we found people (especially of an older vintage) studiously inspecting the names on the mailboxes outside. I took to asking them if I could help them and they scarpered. We even discovered one photographing the nameplates! WTF - its not like they were going find "Herr O. Bin-Laden" on a nameplate and call it in for $25m reward. That would be an 'only in Switzerland' moment for me.

Our mailbox plate cost the same, and only has my partner's name on it because I moved here later. After I did, I simply added my name using a strip of paper and some adhesive tape because spending another 60 chf for a new plate did not appeal much to me. Plenty of other folks in our building did the same and nobody has ever complained - but then, we live in Tessin.

Of course, should authorities complain, I'd buy a new plate.

Now I agree on that - it's really annoying - the same as having to polish the mail box all clean coz of the old paper stickers. Yeah, landlords..I don't know, but Zurich area seems to be worse than others.

Actually for the record, in Canton VAUD the official text of law mention that tenants are free to make those plates everywhere they want. Only thing is the "landlord/owner" might want it to look like the other ones-
I just did it with the agency to "be nice",comply and avoid arguing at the beginning- Mistake
