The definite thing is that PORK is out of discussion. It is rather LAMB and beef. Lots of Muslims drink alcoholic beverages, under whatever "guise". You ought to ask one of them, because they even might like YOU to bring the wine You are not to bring meat with you but might bring some nice spices (Soy-sauce, Harissa, Sambal, Mayonnaise, Mustard, Curry, Ras-el-Hanut, Coriander) with you
Depends about spices. Every arabs and turks that I know own a huge collection of spices. It is part of the food culture!

Spices are like air, you can't cook without them!

Especially that it is a favorite gift to give to host / guests in Middle East. Same with nuts and sweets made of nuts.

You could go to a Turkish grocery store and buy Baklavas, Lokums, etc.

They will appreciate you did some research to find what will please them and what it is culturally done for them.

Sweets as a special meaning.

That's ok honey,

It brang us a smile.

You'll find out soon if they follow a strict philosophy regarding what they eat.

I have many friends (actually almost all my friends me included) who drink alcohol. Some who eat porc. And those who don't eat porc are not so strict (or not at all) on gelatin.
In contrast to that, I have very few Muslim friends who do drink alcohol.

Same here. All 8 known families to me ( Zürich, Olten, Aarau and Berne ) are staunch and abstain from alcohol, and love their grills / BBQs / forest adventures etc. i.e. pretty much ordinary folk.

I think very few muslims break the pork taboo, far more do break the alcohol taboo. The likelihood of breaking the alcohol taboo depends on origin. My empirical observation is that young north-african, middle-east muslims (incl. turkey) more likely to drink alcohol than young asian muslims.

Re: Advice needed - BBQ hosted by Swiss Muslims

Were Asian Muslims to cease their alcohol intake back in Asia, there would be no more jobs for the Religious Squad. A small percentage indulge in that, perhaps smaller during the onset of Ramadhan, but it does exist. OTOH, pork is almost certainly a no-no for all Muslims in Asia.

Sure, if the BBQ is at or near their home. But if it is somewhere outside, for example at the lakeside, it may be appreciated. I mean, most Arabs and Turks also own a nice selection of sweets

I would advise you to avoid any sort of Alchol, though many of Muslims drink lecquers, however, they will never admit such deeds as it is deemed as fatal faults and would eventually draw them to Hell.

I am christian, but I am quite acquanted with their lifestye because of their majority in the place I live

Wish you a happy night, but be carefully, you might be a victim of Binladen or one of his fool fellows

Cheers

Re: Advice needed - BBQ hosted by Swiss Muslims

Take some alcohol along with you, but keep it in the car, or a bag if you are going by public transport. Also take some sweets along with you - and it doesn't have to be Arabic or Turkish in origin. European cakes are the norm for those of us who are born and bred in Europe.

Once you get to the barbeque, if you see people with alcohol, you can present both alcohol and sweets. It might seem like overkill, but overkill works much better than underkill ( if there is such a term ) when it comes to alcohol and sweets.

One other thing, being muslim is not what defines them. It is just a part of what they are.

Sorry, but you live in Egypt. Things are a bit different here: Most muslims are either Turkish or Albanian and in short do 80% - all but the really religious ones - drink alcohol. Frequently and often more than me... who comes from a very alcohol-friendly culture. Especially the second generation that lives here...

I'd therefore go for a vodka watermelon:

Fruit Drink : Which fruit combination you like most?

Or jelly shots:

The kids love them and are far less annoying after having some...

Re: Advice needed - BBQ hosted by Swiss Muslims

I would avoid any and all food or drink unless completely sealed with a Halal stamp. Many, if not most Muslims in the world would receive a cake from a non Muslim, smile sweetly and bin it after they left. We don't know how religious the Muslim family is so we have to assume very. Any food prepared in a kitchen with non Halal meats is Haram. Remember that, for example, vanilla essence in cakes is formulated with alcohol. Point is, you don't know and neither do they so bring a house plant or something for the home like a vase or picture frame.

the fact that they invited a non-muslim female (maybe single?) to join for a BBQ is a very good hint on how religious they are

Sorry, it isn't. Mixing of sexes is more about the destination - if she's mixing with mixed sex family then it's fine. As long as an unrelated man and woman aren't alone together there is nothing haram. Do you believe single women visiting a Muslim country must exist alone? (and yes, single women do travel alone in Islam, it isn't all Saudi Arabia)

Re: Advice needed - BBQ hosted by Swiss Muslims

By the time they get to the BBQ, they may not have any room to get in the car with how many gifts they 'may or may not want'. I think everyone guesses what's a good gift to bring to any BBQ, whether or not they are muslim.

I've had guests bring alcohol to parties that we've thrown (and we are muslim) but it's not like I shunned them for bringing that evil stuff into my house. If they are truly your good friends, they'll enjoy your company, no matter even if you give them a BMW car or something...although I think you might get invited to more BBQ's that way

Can I be your neighbour?

P.S. When Helm was considering whine then I assumed she'd be logging into EF.

P.P.S. Take yourself, a smile and a little keepsake. They've invited you because they'd like your company, not your gifts.

Your neighbours are irrelevant to my post and to this thread. We're talking about Muslims and we don't have information on how pious they are. When in doubt you play the safe option. Certainly bringing alcohol into a Muslim household is incredibly insensitive, whether you suspect they drink it or not.

Thanks for pointing that out. I would never have realised after being a muslim for the last 40 years and having lived in Dubai and Abu Dhabi for 6 years and having a wife who has lived in the Middle East for nearly a quarter of a century.

Before you start spouting off on what is or is not sensitive, get hold of the idea that some people might be a bit more clued up on Islam and its many, many shades than you are.
