Me & Pete (Ricardo car scammer)

Quite a funny scam this. Went onto Ricardo (www.ricardo.ch) as I'm looking for a car and saw one (Mercedes B180 2007) for only 9,000CHF. Have been toing and froing by mail with some guy in the UK who posted up (his) UK docs, Driving Licence, Passport, etc and even photos of his family, the documents are of a UK (Cleveland) COP who obviously must have lost them. Obviously like an email you have to read bottom to top as I've directly pasted it up. Cheers! oh, and obviously, beware!

Dear ******** ,

Due the fact that i'm not able to use a car with the steering wheel on the left part in UK , i'm now in the situation to sell the car for a lower price .

However , the car it's in a very good condition , i could say that it's like new . I don't smoke , no dog in the car , so free of animal hair .... it was used mainly by my wife and in the past year i used it .... so it's a women's car ....

I understand the delicate situation , it's not easy to buy a car like this .... a car , bike , moto , even a t-shirt .... normal would be to see it . to test it , but i'm not there ....

What i would want to do .... well .... since the car it's in a garage , i would want to send the key from this garage which is at 20 km from Zurich ...with a shipper who will go there , load the car on a platform and they will bring you the car to your address ....

Money ... that's the big problem .... on the other hand you don't want to send the money in advance , i can understand that , yes , i agree with that .... on the other hand ... i don't want to get cheated myself , i just want to be sure that i'll get paid ... so ... i would want for the shipper to keep an insurance down payment of 30%-40% from the total amount .... money which will remain blocked with them ...

Only after an inspection from your part .... i'll get paid .... so please keep in mind that i'll not see one euro from you until the car will be actually in your possession .... now you must think of that ....

Next . i work as a police officer ..... think what you want .... but i don't see the logic in a scam performed by a police officer who's action can let two little girls without a father .... so no sir , no thanks , i don't see that happening .....

Money has no value when you don't have somebody to spend it with .... my family is more important then plastic and paper .... OK ?

Don't want to continue .... no kind of problems .... no problem at all .... it was quite nice to see that i had the privilege to speak with an intelligent and kind person , that's clear from your kind words .... and if you will not take my car , hope that you'll find a good one in the near future ....

Kind regards,

Pete

Dear Pete,

Excuse me in advance if you are offended but I would like to say that I am also a hard-working person too with family (& even a dog!). I need a car for me to go to work & this would be ideal,
I have bought cars before in Switzerland so I know how it works. I have never done a deal in the method you describe here (that is suitable to you) &
given that you are a Police officer you may understand my suspicions (and why I hesitate to forward my address or any personal information).

If I decide to buy your car I will pay, preferably in advance of the paperwork being completed. If you are in a difficult situation & I can help I would, but I am
not convinced I want to go further with this right now even though I am a completely honest person. I can't understand how I will be delivered a car without payment first.

Why not give me your telephone number & we can talk about this, I have unlimited tariff (free in EU) to call, no problem. I also think that the price of your car is not as much as others would ask, why?

I know, as you say, how much family is important. I see you have a lovely family, such cute children, happy for you.

Cheers,

******* (me)

That's what i want to say .... but i can't let my wife alone ...

i wanted to arrange with the transport company who can bring you the car to your home ....

For payment , i do not want the money in advance , but i want to be sure that i'll get paid , so i asked the transport company to insure the transaction . The legal procedure would be for the transport company to arrange a neutral bank account with a public notary or with a lawyer where the money will remain until after inspection .( 40 % , 50% as insurance deposit )

when you will be sure that all is OK with the car and with the papers , i'll get paid , and not in advance .

that's the legal procedure , which is safe for everybody

Now don't think that i want your money , there are some things more important on this world , like family , and it happens that i have one , wife , kids ,we even have a dog , i wake up each morning at 7 am and come back at 5 pm , work hard for my money as a police officer , so i would want to have a safe transaction . Those are the conditions , and hope that you will agree , i'll attach some photos of me and my family to see with who you speak .....

If you are OK with that please tell me , we can start the transaction when you want . For that , i'll need your name and your address ....

Cheers,

Pete

Pete,

Here is what I would like to do if possible: 1) have a look at your car & its paperwork. 2) A short test drive 3) if I'm happy to buy, transfer you the money & do the paperwork 4) collect or have the car delivered.

Please let me know if this is possible and if not, well, thanks for your time,

Regards,

******** (me)

no problem sir , that's nothing to worry about .... the main thing is if you would like the car .... that's the most important thing ...

Now , the MKF was made this May , it's in super good condition , no accidents , service was made at 140,000 km , now it has 144,000 km ....winter '/ summer tires ...

the main problem is that i can't let my wife alone with our two little girls , she is all alone .... and i can't leave her ... so that's why i would want to arrange with a transport company who can come , bring you the car and arrange the paperwork ....

Would wait for your answer and hope that you'll agree ....

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Peter,

I'm interested and would like to have a look at the car. Sorry, I was confused and thought I saw
your car on Autoscout.

Please can you give me more details about the car like MFK, last service, winter/Summer tyres and let me know
when I can come & see it (and where). I live near ******

I can make a quick decision to buy or not. No problem.

Thanks for sending me the photo's and of course that you write in English, it is much appreciated.

Presumably you backed away when he pointed out that it was a "woman's" car... Up until then it looked like a legit deal!

Changing grammar throughout the emails. Mention of advance payments to a shipping company. A presumably too good to pass offer. Reeks of scam.

Re: Me & Pete (Ricardo car scammer)

The other day I had similar exchange of emails with guy from Ireland whose advert I found on autoscout (I deleted them some time ago) basically, he wanted me to secure deposit and he was going to send the car over. Also super deal. I had to hurry up because he had many folks interested in purchase Am I so critical and suspicious to let the legit good deals pass me by?

whenever someone selling a car/bike etc says they will use a transport company to send a car so you can look at it ..........is a scam.

Exactly - especially here where a "transport company" would probably charge the best part of CHF 9,000 just to bring the thing to you!

Yes I know, bloody sexist thinking all cars that have a woman owner are 'woman's cars' ... 'one lady owner' would have sounded more authentic if he was British. And, they had a dog which has never been in the car.

I did. Called Cleveland Police to inform them last night, they told me that this particular scam is now being executed across Europe with the scammer using the Officers documents. They have had numerous reports of this so that is why I posted up on here.
