Meh. Forgiveness shouldn't be underated. Someone who makes a genuine mistake will often be more careful and grateful for an act of leniency than if punished.

Crying about it? People - especially women - cry about all sorts of things. Never understood it myself (but then again I went to a boarding school so it was beaten out of me), but if she made a genuine mistake, then yes, she might cry (or something like that... I read it somewhere... I think).

That's the benefit of dealing with another human being rather than a machine.

Actually, it's been shown that the guilty tend to cry, whereas the innocent get angry

I think that was only when accused of something though, so if the ticket inspector accused her of deliberately trying to dodge the fare and she started crying ... well, then we would know !

Nir, Trev,
have you guys never been stopped for speeding, accidently running a red light, and let off with a warning by a police officer using his or her discretion ?
That is the problem, accidently running a red light, I almost died once because somebody accidently ran a red light...
Fines work as a mechanism to prevent further recklessness.

Yes, I have, and I don't call them examples of the milk of human kindness oozing, I treat them as random instances of leniency which should preferably remain random and rare, not routine. Nothing to be touched and all that mushy stuff

Actually not. I have a long list of 40 CHF tickets for driving one to three kms too fast. Yes, they piss me off. Yes, I think the law is rubbish by being monitored far too strict.

But: I never whine about paying those tickets. I was fully aware that Swiss are anal about speed limits and willfully decided to drive with common sense and not be a rolling road block. If this means to get a ticket from time to time it was then my own decision and I pay for it.

I have taken the tram without ticket before. I saw it approaching and sprinted on it as it was late and buying a ticket would have translated into waiting for 15 mins... Yes, I was fully aware that I should have bought the ticket before and would have never complained if I got a fine. That's life.

Re: I got so touched today by a great human reaction

all local transports should be free anyway, free meaning paid by the community and split amongst all of us. It should be one of the basic public service to commute efficiently and for free. That would be good for workers, good for businesses and good for the local areas. Every kanton is looking for ways to reduce car usage and the only alternative is public transport. How do people find it natural to have free motorways when it costs a fortune to build and maintain but accept to pay CHF 5.60 for a return trip in Zurich?

Well, I'd talk to more chicks in an hour than you in the last year...
......

have you heard about quality not quantity?

Just because you answer the telephone at a computer help desk, and Ouchboy, sweet young and debaucherous as he is, prefers to spend one-on-one time in the back of "moving vehicles" with...

(!!) wait... too much information(!!!)
and off topic..

Do you fine your kids if they do wrong in the exam and or do a mistake?

If not, then how the hell they learn?, fines is just part of an economical plans nothing more, nothing less

For what I pay (CHF 60 month) to use the trams, buses and trains in the TNW region... its as good as free. This is already a heavily subsidised service.

Re: I got so touched today by a great human reaction

The lack of humanness in some of the posts in this thread disturbs me.
After everything is said and done, we are human.
And being human is having a heart to help those in need.
We may not be able to judge the genuine from the fake, but I would rather live with the feeling that the person I helped took advantage than having to live with the guilt of not helping someone really desperate.

I sincerely hope I don't ever need help from you guys.
I guess "cutting someone some slack" does not exist in your world.
