Re: Do I need my passport everywhere?

No, you don't have to have your passport on you. But police can bring you to the police station to identify you.

I suppose it's better to have either an ID Card, Passport or Drivers Licence on you.

Re: Do I need my passport everywhere?

Thanks for asking this question. When I first came here someone scared me and said I shouldn't go to France or Germany because I'm only allowed in Switzerland.

"Whuh?????"

It didn't make any sense to me, but I'm still not confident enough to go across without my passport, just in case I'm coming back to Switzerland and the mean customs man decides to ask for it.

Now I feel better about just going with my permit in my wallet.

Short: Permit is enough but necessary inside CH.

I've been in the situation: police controling you in town want your Swiss permit, it's easier for everybody as this is a Swiss document. Even at Geneva Airport, the guy wanted to see it when I entered the country back from holliday travel. I didn't have it so pasport was all right, I invited the guy at my place, asked if he like wine or beer, he stuttered back a kind of wannabe authoritarian tone answer "you need your permit, have it with you next time". He didn't like me saying he could still come to my place.
Even being nice doesn't help, they don't know what they want...

Re: Do I need my passport everywhere?

I tend to be a bit of a freakish worry-wart about identification so I make sure I have my permit + insurance card with me every time I leave the house. (One of my phobias is having some sort of medical emergency and being unable to be identified - I'm terrified of being "Jane Doe")

I used to also always carry my passport if I knew I was going to cross over into Germany or France but I am nervous that I'll lose it so now leave it home UNLESS I am going more than an hour from home.

Than you have a visa not permit, permit is a card you get for residency & to work, i believe you cannot work / intern without valid permit...other members can confirm this though.

If this is the case then your work in CH is illegal, it's not only a problem of going out with a passport

You do absolutely need to be able to produce identification and proof that you are here "legally" upon request. I personally have never been stopped on the street and asked for my papers BUT I do believe the police are allowed to do this.

So, if your passport and permit are tied together, stapled together, one and the same... then yes, you need to have your passport with you.

Theoretically NO, you do not need to have a passport with you anytime. BUT I started to have an identity card with me when becoming 17 as
- I was looking "Southern/Oriental"
- I was from hobby and profession active at airports
-
So that my advice is YES, carry any kind of identification paper with you all the time. I mean you are from a country where even a tiny money exchange needs passport and filling out and signing a lot of paperwork. It is not half as much here, but a single identification thing will serve the purpose.

The answer is a DEFINITE YES. Please take your identification thing with you always !

come on, what is the matter ? I had a cousin in Geneva of half Hungarian and half German-speaking CH origin, and with her friends cycling around in the Geneva of the 1940ies and 50ies and getting into France without even noticing it. She had an ID thing with her from age 6 onward !!!!

Huh? You must have your passport (non-EU) or EU/EEA ID card to cross the border.

Re: Do I need my passport everywhere?

I tried using a driving license when I got "controlled" in Basel, much to the policemans digust. "You must always carry your permit..yada yada yada.."

The problem was my driving license states (UK) you could see him rubbing his hands when he thought it was from the "Ukraine" unfortunately for him I explained I was English, I must have ruined his day somewhat.

Always carry Id I have my permit on me and my health insurance card at all times.

I never carry my passport in case it gets stolen, then ends up cloned in some dodgy backroom in Moldova or similar. It's just too much of a risk, UK passports are in big demand aparantly

Re: Do I need my passport everywhere?

My wife and her Swiss friend (both of Oriental origin) were walking near the border, and were aggressively stopped by guards, who demanded to see ID. The Swiss friend went absolutely ballistic and told them "I'm Swiss, I do not have to show my ID to you. I do not have to carry ID. I'm in my own country, and I'm allowed to enjoy my countryside without being harrassed". (translated from Aargaudeutsch). The guards apologised and went on their way.
