Horrible that two people lost their lives.

My wife's company Also had their party in Zug, but were luckily inside..

Good news is that all our blinds held up well. Funny thing is that some of the other house owners wanted the developer to replace them as they did not think they would be strong enough for a storm guess that case is closed.

However most things on the terasse was not in the their right place except for the garden table, which treveus can confirm is flipping heavy.

Now, this has triggered me to re- read my car insurance policy to see if hail is covered under kasko or otherwise.

I took some pictures on the walk to the station, but I can't work out how to put them on the computer. I'll get the Clever Person to have a go later.

Plastic tables and garden boxes looked like they'd been machine gunned. It was weird: clean round holes in some places, total destruction in others. Shutters were bent and battered, the pavements were strewn with leaves, fruit, pine cones and branches (there was a lovely smell of pine in the air), we found the remains of a plastic sign a couple of hundred yards away from where it used to stand, and one of my colleagues had to arrange alternative transport as her car windows had been shattered.

I've never seen such destruction after a bout of bad weather.

BTW, MN tells me that winds of 130 km/h were reported in Oberaegeri - that's a 12 on the Beaufort Scale - hurricane force.

No wonder it was noisy.
These intense, violent storms seem to be coming more frequent (relatively).
August 2009, here on the edge of Romandie, we had similar destruction from an incredibly intense - but fortunately short-lived (10/15 mins) storm;
- heavy rain,
- huge chunks of ice (not necessarily spherical),
- hurricane force winds.

The safety glass of my velux windows was smashed and the etinet roof of my shed had many holes.

About midnight last night we had some incredibly heavy rain for about 10mins (just as I was out with dog), some lightning/thunder around (but not over head, and no hail.

Sad to learn that 2 people lost their lives as a result of this extreme weather.

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

I took the train to Richterswil and then the bus to Wollerau Fuerti for work today (as my windshield was pretty well done in by the hail last night) and got a pretty good survey of the damage coming up the hill. Quite a few trees are down, in whole or part, and lots of dented up shutters and garage doors. Very fortunate there were not more serious injuries -- if that had hit during rush hour (relative thing in Wollerau, to be sure, but there are lots of cars on the road around 5:15 - 6 PM) then it would have been even worse. It's not hurrican level damage, or even tornado level, but quite a bit of harm was caused in a very short period. Among other thing, 95% of the cars I saw have pretty serious hail damage. Hail dents are pretty much impossible to fix too . . .

Just to confirm it is captured under Natural Hazzard.

Was that a tornado?

We've just been hit by something, there's debris everywhere and hailstones the size of squash balls have battered our shutters to bits.

Seems to be subsiding now - but what was it? Anyone have any idea?

Simply a hailstorm

Believe it or not, although I'm just a few miles from DB'd place, all we got was some gusty wind and a slight drizzle. That's what hailstorms often do. I once saw a farm over in the Rhine Valley where the corn behind the farm house got totally flattened while the wheat in front of the house went unscathed, actullay not even wet.
Yes, around here if one village gets it, the neighboring is usually untouched.

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

ACK! I was just commenting on my facebook about how beautiful the storm was last night. For where I lived, the full impact of the lightning and heavy downpour was only felt after midnight. No hailstorms. I didnt sleep much because my dog was sitting on me, trying to watch the storm and the other half of the time, trying to burrow himself under the duvet when the lightning hit. Silly bint.

Its most unfortunate that 2 lives have been lost. Awful

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

You can see how localised the storm was on these pictures here (scroll down to see the photographs taken by "Tinu" in Maennedorf).

Apparently a waterspout was seen on the lake, too.

Just had a call from a friend who works at Roche Rotkreuz who told me of losing her two colleagues, just as they were arriving for their summer party on the Zug lakeshore this afternoon.

Again, we never know the minute.
This is now absolutely horrible !

Here's our local news about the fatal storm:

http://www.zug4you.ch/violent_storm_...rea_again.html

http://www.zug4you.ch/two_roche_empl...hailstorm.html

With those conditions, what else could they have done but taken shelter. Very very unfortunate and sad. Sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues.

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

We just had a lot of thunder/lightning and torrential rain for about 20 mins @ midnight in Fribourg.

Tragic about those people losing there lives, I know a couple of people who work for Roche in Zug.

We had a similar hailstorm a few years back when all the windows of our house were broken, half the roof torn off, and the car pock-marked.
The insurance company finally paid for all the damage.
It was pretty alarming at the time and my grandchildren, who were visiting, still look rather nervous when they hear a clap of thunder when they're here.

There's that evil cloud I was on about, in Tinu's pics. It was very black from where I was standing. Awfully glad I legged it. I am best friends with my natural instinct today!

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

Re. car insurance, when a similar event 2yrs. ago caused considerable damage in my area, the insurance company (National - although others did the same) set up a rolling assessment centre in an old warehouse, with auto bodywork experts, who were able to financially assess bodywork damage and give a repair cost, which could be used at a bodywork repairer. Specialists and equipment were brought in from other countries because of the vast scale of damage - I even spoke with one who was here from Oz for a couple of weeks.

Just report damage to your insurance as soon as possible and wait to hear back - it took quite a few months here - for bodywork dents ..... cracked and broken glass, obviously requires more immediate action, and I'm sure they will advise.
