A wonderful storm in Basel last night. Beautifully timed to start at midnight for a couple of hours, so you can relax in bed watching the sky light up and hear the rolling thunder.
it was really cool, my apartment looks out west so I could see it coming from miles away (so far that the lightening looked yellow). I've never seen proper forked lightening before so I just hope that none of my neighbours happened to look up at my window because I probably looked a bit strange, standing there gaping at the show

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

I woke up thinking it was the end of the world, big windows and hail equal tremendous noise. Add to that the howling in the ventilation and I'm a bit knackered today... But it is lovely and cool.

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

Hubby, Bonny-cat and I watched the light show for some time last night before the sky opened up with a big boom overhead which gave very slight warning to the hail that was about to fall.

We quickly closed up the windows that were open (was a shame, it was still so hot and sticky inside) and as the roof-line windows we have (attic apartment) are right over our bed, we closed the storm shades. Rather pay / deal with insurance regarding them than have to get completely new bedroom.*

* Then again, maybe a new bedroom wouldn't be so bad, might be able to convince hubby to get a larger, thicker mattress, in a closer to "American style" bed out of it all. Rats! Shoulda thought ahead a bit better!

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

I've never seen lightning like I did last night. There was so much and it lasted for such a long time, it looked like someone had left a strobe light on.

I had to run onto the balcony to bring some stuff inside, I was in a hurry due to the hail and ran right into the half closed shutters on my way back in

Hey Peg A, wasn't your kitty scared of the noise? I thought cats and dogs hated storms. Maybe if it's raining 'cats and dogs' they actually like it!

When we could see the lightning off in the distance she was out on the terrace enjoying the cool breeze, sure enough though, as soon as there was a huge thunder boom overhead she hotfooted it under the bed.

We didn't see her again until it was time to get up this morning.

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

So I got a vid of the storms last night from far off, they were to the north of me, no idea how far away, maybe over rothenburg, maybe further. Could only upload 15mins of it (storm was going on for well over an hour without changing intensity), but I doubt anyone will watch it all through! Exposure ain't brilliant.

'scuse the audio, tv was on in the background and that bloody awful movie mistakes show was on bbc3. That webb chap can't be doing so well.

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

Pretty heavy last night.
One of our dogs doesn't like storms so he crawled under our bed & would not come out. Made it difficult to sleep because he was shivering & shaking the bed.

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

Our dog was fast asleep until I got up to stare at the lightening then she decided to do her barky-larky-wobble thing which translated means tearing around the bedroom barking and shaking any toy at hand (or should that be paw/mouth????). Very angry at thunder and lightening!!!!

Re: Violent, fatal Summer storms over Central Switzerland

Funny, I've noticed a 'phew' of us Brits are quite relieved when the storms break the hot/warm weather. I thought it was just me.
Last night was sooooo warm even late on. The warmest evening this year that I can remember in my hood!
I'm sure the Latin types (eg Swiss :-) ) and other 'continentals' think we're crazy.
Now where did I put my knotted handkerchief?.........oh there it is, on my head!
