Re: Swiss men

True.... Swiss ladies are slender, not skinny, or sticks. They're quite delicate I find. I feel quite self conscious when I'm among a bunch of waify Frenchy-Swissy ladies with their petite small-boned physiques. I much prefer the Swiss German parts and Northern Europe, ..... feel a little more normal there.

Why do Swiss men want to marry foreign women ? Perhaps because they're star-struck by the exotic countries and differences (here and where-ever)

Unfortunately those same differences that initially attract can cause issues as it is harder to adapt to married/couple life when there is no common culture or history

Probably the same reason that lots of of Swiss woman marry foreign men.

Tom
Had lunch with some old friends today- the men, Swiss, two of them married to French women from Perpignan, another to a German woman from Koln area. And of course my OH, Brit married to me (Swiss) - all been married 40 years. So I asked them the question. In their case, it was just chance- as the 3 girls had come to work as nurses at the local hospital in the late 60s. I had gone to London to learn English more or less at the same time.

They all agreed though that many Swiss men from traditional areas marry foreign women from Thailand, the Philippines, etc- as they are ready to obey and do as they are told, do the housework, look after the kids and, well... This happens even more to men who are divorced from Swiss women and re-marry more 'compliant' and less demanding wives.

Sky up here in the mountains many Swiss women are defintiely not svelte (moi non plus- although I was for a very long time )

Well, I've also observed, that men from Western countries who marry an Asian woman have a tendency to fall pretty low on the attractiveness scale (be it socio-economic, looks, age or a mixture of all factors).

Most of the Swiss men I've met are strangely slender too, too slender for my taste, I'd say. :P

So 'unattractive' people from western European countries who apparently judge people on all sorts of shallow things like their watches, shoes, etc as indicators of 'status' and 'attractiveness' should do...what....exactly? Live a lonely celibate life?

I cannot say what the ought to do...it was a simple observation on my behalf. Why are you responding to my post...do you happen to fall into the aforementioned category?

Re: Swiss men

By the time I had finished reading this thread, I had forgotten what it was originally about??

Quote:

I think this is kinda it, at least where my hubby was concerned. Not specifically about cousins exactly but more the interest in "exotic" American culture and women rather than "familiar" Swiss things.

One thing learned here in Basel is that it isn't large and sometimes can seem quite small. I think I've "run into" people I know here more often than I ever simply bumped into people I knew even living in "tiny" Daytona Beach - at least certainly so if I consider my first 3yrs there compared to first 3 here.

So, I think that's part of it. Some folks do alright living in the same town their whole lives and marrying someone who also grew up in the same area, others search a bit further for a mate and yet others search a lot further. Heck, I lived in three separate parts of the country as an adult in the US and "finally" met the man I married and he wasn't even from the US at all!
Honestly Peg A, .... what??

No, but they could try and adapt the fact Swiss and European women are no longer happy to just 'serve' - be it in the kitchen, with kids or in the bedroom, but wish to be partners, not necessarily 'equal' as in the same, but on the same level. Not everybody is born a beauty- but they could try to make a bit of an effort with their personal hygiene, weight and general fitness- rather than 'buy' somebody who won't be too picky, for all sorts of reasons.

I've never found Swiss women to be more demanding than any other women, nor Asians any less.

But I have seen this happen! Small village, Phillipino wife (young) never goes out with husband and is hardly to be seen. He parties, has fun with colleagues as he wishes.

Quite a few up here married to local older farmers. Some hardly ever seen, some paraded by their proud older (sorry, not very attractive either) husbands.

I always find it amusing that Asian women are pegged as meek or obedient. You know you always have to watch out for the quiet ones... dragon lady wasn't a term created by observing obedient Asian women!

Very true...my old flatmate was from Korea and she certainly had a fiery temper. Also she could not cook or clean and her boyfriend (who was English) had to do all of the cooking.

thats not fair! I was a a birthday party yesterday, and my hubby, and the other 3 men who were married to foriegners, were all quite decent!

Now, you are stereotyping! just as LIB......not all foreign wives were bought, and are happy to be the maid and the whore
Really not fair at all! I know the look people give me, hen they make that assumption, Oh, poor girl, she must be so enslaved, ect ect.....what bull!
It took my husband 7years to convince me that Switzerland was better than S.Africa. And all the mixed marriages that I know are not marriages of convenience.
My hubby said that it was my easy going, down to earth personality (not to mention the curves and the lips) that attracted him to me.
On one of our first dates, he took me to a restaurant, which was fully booked, it was already late, and I did not bat an eyelid, he was so apologetic, and surprised, when I didnt let that ruin the evening.

and the fact that we met on a plane, would sum up the answer to the op's question, Swiss travel alot, it natural that they meet people from other countries.

Nah, they'd actually have to break some rules to do that. That and learn how to drink heavily and work on their quiet but menacing look.

I take my hat off to all those who have spouses from different cultures.
I would imagine, for some, it would take hard work to make their marriage a success, not that those of us who have spouses from the same background have it easier, I mean we all have issues within our relationships that we need to work at, however, I assume it just adds another level of possible difficulties.
