| | Re: Swiss men
I dont want to be mean to Swiss people, they have some qualities and they are not all like that, but from what Ive seen in 4 years in Switzerland, I find the Swiss folk mostly cold and unspontaneous. So i can understand they find a partner from another country more interesting! If one can choose between a cold and a warm-hearted person, I think they will most likely choose the latter. I think another reason could be that the Swiss travel a lot, also during their studies. So they probably fall in love abroad! |

As a girl who comes from Appalachia, I speak with authority when I say that it would be a shame to accidentally marry your cousin. Small country and all.

Small country and all. | | | | | I think this is kinda it, at least where my hubby was concerned. Not specifically about cousins exactly but more the interest in "exotic" American culture and women rather than "familiar" Swiss things.
One thing learned here in Basel is that it isn't large and sometimes can seem quite small. I think I've "run into" people I know here more often than I ever simply bumped into people I knew even living in "tiny" Daytona Beach - at least certainly so if I consider my first 3yrs there compared to first 3 here.
So, I think that's part of it. Some folks do alright living in the same town their whole lives and marrying someone who also grew up in the same area, others search a bit further for a mate and yet others search a lot further. Heck, I lived in three separate parts of the country as an adult in the US and "finally" met the man I married and he wasn't even from the US at all!

Swiss people travel around a lot so it's inevitable that they are going to mix up their dating pool a bit more than nations that never leave their home country.

Just a guess (and a bit from experience of being with Swiss and non-Swiss) ..... Because unlike Swiss partnerships where partners can live together for years without marrying or having kids, many other cultures don't find that acceptable or desirable.
So apart from the fact that Switzerland being i) central in Europe and ii) a desirable place to live has a greater pool of foreigners from which to pick a partner, I think that the non-Swiss woman maybe more strident in her view of....to quote the famous sociologist, B Knowles...."If you like it, then you should have put a ring on it" | The following 7 users would like to thank Caviarchips for this useful post:

Most of the Swiss i know are married to Swiss..
But then i live in a village, and you in a city?
Some met their future partner at the church youth-group, though one "wild guy" married a girl from the neighbouring village - he still gets flack for it - 20 years later.

for a minute there my eyes glazed over because you were quoting some famous sociologist whose name I didn't know.
I don't know what's scarier... that I did that, or that Beyonce might actually one day be quotable.

I surmise from some of what I have seen is that some Swiss men imagine that foreign women, particularly from Eastern Europe and Asia, may be more likely to fulfill their fantasies of obedience, cleaning, cooking, sex, etc. than a Swiss woman, plus the fact there is a massive, partially underground business based on that premise.

I'm not sure about the rest of swiss men, but my ex married me to get a 24/7 nurse and houswkeeper to take care of his older son and our 2 boys. How did I discover that? The day I said I cant do it anymore and he must call for help ie, spitex, etc. He said it will be better if I give him the divorse so he could marry a Thai chic (his expresion not mine) and exchange papers for atention. And all this time I was thinking it was love at first sight .. silly me

It's perhaps a way to make sure the loved ones will be able to carry on ?

I'm curious to know if the number of Swiss men marrying foreign women has dramatically increased since the dawn of the Internet Age. (I would think so). And then, of course, they are often forced to marry in order to be able to live together in the same country.
Also, I know quite a few Swiss guys (friends of my husband) who have told me that they find it really difficult to meet women here. So maybe this is another reason why they end up with foreign women?

Well, my husband is a gamer and more than a little bit of a homebody so if he were likely to meet a woman, it would have been one who games OR one at work. So, indeed, we did meet playing an online game in which we were in the same guild... now if those cute young hussies at work** will leave him alone, everything would be peaceful! **Really, I've met the cute young females at work, they're alright. | The following 2 users would like to thank Peg A for this useful post:
