Honey, those girls up north got the vote in 1906, yes, 0 ...6 they wear plenty of peircings, etc. but...tats carry a different sort of message. It's like wearing short-shorts that show your cooter, you know? It's done for an audience....my curiosity is that in a country so consumed with rules and not exactly known for it's women's lib, how so many of them have tats.
Glad you tell us what message tattoos carry.
Get over your insecurity and get yourself the tramp stamp you deserve.

Hey, where I come from, that is, indeed, the message that especially publicly visible tats on a woman carry. It totally varies by class and status. Would you expect the Duchess of Cambridge to have a tat? Probably not. Someone from the Jersey Shore show? Probably. I don't make the rules and I wasn't judging here, I was just curious about seeing so many.

And I'm too old for a tramp stamp. (and if I'm so off the rails here, why do you suppose it's called 'tramp' stamp....)

No, I'm not. If you're so insecure about how others perceive your tattoos so as to get your pants in a wedge when being asked a simple question about them relative to other cultural views of them, perhaps you should do something about that.

That Dutchess of Cambridge is the recently married Kate Middleton, former Sloane Ranger and future Queen of England.

She's a bit young for the Sloane Ranger set. Maybe you're thinking of Tara Palmer Tompkinson, yah?

Really?
Funny, 'cause you've managed to stereotype white trash, trailers & abusive boyfriends, Jersey shore, Biker girls & that you find tattoos to be a"cliche for rebellion or prostitution" in quite short order.

I suggest you get out more.

You seem to try to tell others how they should perceive tattoos based on what backwater you come from. I'm making fun of that. And just for you: tramp stamp is a specific tattoo, not female tattoos in general.
Whatever happened to live and let live?

That these stereotypes exist and are well known is not my doing. Again, I didn't coin the term 'tramp stamp' and, if you grew up in the heartland of the US, some of those stereotypes are well earned.

My curiosity was why so many women around here seem to have them, especially when in the US and many other parts of the EU, the stigma attached to them still indicates a certain class and status. It was an observation and I don't believe I called anyone names to warrant such defensiveness. In fact, given the defensiveness, I'd gather that much of those stereotypes still exist here which adds to my curiosity as to their popularity.

Re: tattoos on swiss women

Where I come from tattoos are mainly rooted in either naval history or heavy industry but I can't see the Swiss girlies either boarding a frigate or operating a plasma torch so I guess the reasons for getting one are purely for fashion.

I've always wondered how they get the tattoos so perfect when working on skin which is stretchy or wobbly. It must be so easy to distort. I saw a girl getting off the tram the other morning with a kind of lace ring tattooed around her upper calf - how the hell did the tattooist keep that straight, it's not like you can rub it out if you make a mistake.

What a cowardly reasoning. Try it with anything else and you'll realise how stupid you sound, no offence. I'm male, have no tattoos and only like really nice ones on girls, hence no reason to be defensive about anything..
Don't hide behind the stereotypes of others, just say what you think.

Whats wrong with tattoos, its a method of individualizing yourself. Most tatoos are not done for an audience, its done as a remembrance, symbolism.
And no, I dont know the parallel between having a tattoo, and wearing pornstar shorts?

Swiss women are actually more liberalized than you realise. Besides, have you noticed its the younger generation 18-35 whose getting the tattoos, and this generation is far more different than the one preceding it.

Re: tattoos on swiss women

My younger sis has a couple of tattoos, one is a butterfly across her lower back - it is very pretty and where she wants it is her own business. My thoughts are that at least it wasn't placed on her pubis, she didn't have to get naked for the ink to be applied.

The other one is very beautiful, I can not remember exactly, a peacock or something, and it goes from her left shoulder down across her back. Even my father agrees that that one is nice and tasteful (although he'd wanted to know who applied the butterfly so he could go have a word ).

The wife of my baby brother also has some tattoos, the more memorable ones for me are sets of tiny footprints she has on her foot, one for each child she raised - two steps from her first marriage, two more from the babies she and my brother had together.

I'm thinking to do something similar, but in a more "just for me" (but non sexual) place, probably an angel or something for my lost baby.
