Hello Everyone,

I don't normally recommend books online, but there is a new book out that I think is of interest to the expat community.

It's called the Watchers and its set in Lausanne. I would describe it as a gothic thriller somewhere between The Shadow of the Wind and The Lost Symbol. As a Lausanne resident what I find cool about this book is that events happen in places I know. The author lives in Switzerland and has obviously done a lot of research.

Has anyone else read the book?

This seems to be a really gripping book - if you like this kind of genre. For me something on my shopping list for the summer break for sure.

Thank you Patrick, I am actually shopping for my next read right now, so I will probably give it a shot.

Reviews say the book is slow to get going and only picks up pace towards the end. That's true, but for me the enjoyment was inverse. The author's portrayal of Marc Rochat in the first half is truly exceptional. Purely personal taste, but other aspects of the story didn't match that for me. Nevertheless I'm glad I read it. Rochat is a unique and memorable character. Worth a read just for that.

I started reading the book and, though I enjoy it so far, I'm very disappointed at the numerous spelling and grammatical mistakes in the French sentences.

I'm a native French speaker born in Lausanne, and many of the local places are spelt incorrectly, or even named inadequately. Many of the French expressions are simply not French as well.

I mean, the guy lives in Switzerland and obviously did a lot of research. It wouldn't have killed him to ask a native speaker to proof-read his text no?!
