Basel Storm!

Fast'ish moving, hard hitting, lightning and hail ridden storm just passing through Basel. We had some heavy hail for about 10 min, seems to have quieted now though.

Anyhow, if you're out in it (or about to be), please be careful! Remember, do NOT hide from hail or lightning under trees as they can fall on you, you MUST seek actual shelter. Also, with lightning like that, it's better to just get wet than use an umbrella with metal parts, hopefully you can get out of the hail before it gets you too stingy, the pieces aren't so big, "only" about the size of a malted milk ball (malteazer is the product here).

I had a feeling it was coming like this, the clouds were looking funny a bit ago, with wisps hanging below them - they do that when it's thinking do tornado type things.

A car will protect you from hail pretty effectively, but I was referring primarily to an electrical storm.

Re: Basel Storm!

It was a hot, sweltering night and I couldn't sleep (I am typical Swiss and turn in at 10:00pm when quiet hours start). I figured it might rain, due to daytime heating, the way the clouds were turning (as Peg mentioned). but when it didn't come by nightfall I figured nothing would happen.

Then the storm came. It was intense. My dog who is usually not scared of storms was hiding under the covers. Hail was hitting the blinds and I was so glad I wasn't out in that nastiness. I had to go about to close some windows. Then I thought it was over, and another wave came, longer lasting and more intense, though no hail.

Nevertheless, it was still hot last night even after it all had passed, and getting out of bed this morning was very tough. But I'm glad today's forecast calls for rain and a falling temperature. Maybe we'll all sleep better tonight.

Re: Basel Storm!

I was woken up at around 4 in the morning by lightning and strong rain.
No hail thankfully, or altleast not enough to wake us.
Closed the windows but then it got too hot so had to open them again.
Looks like it was far worse at other places...hope everyone is okay.

I was thinking the exact same thing...Flight buffs out there, how dangerous are those conditions to a plane?

Re: Basel Storm!

I could see a storm in the distance last night, incredible, not just a strike every couple of minutes, but a strike every few seconds.... for over an hour. Must have been some distance away, couldn't hear any lightning.

Planes fly on an altitude above clouds..
In addition, a plane is a long, metal tube that blasts through the sky at almost Mach speed...it is sure able to withstand some gusty winds.

Re: Basel Storm!

Thanks LIB but I've heard of aeroplanes being hit by lightning..SCARY!!!
Of course flying is still safer than getting in a car but that's off topic..and
I love going off topic..

Re: Basel Storm!

There was a plane flying low over Binningen (presumably into Basel airport) at 11.30pm last night - right next to the storm. I wasnt sure if i was more surprised by it flying so close to the lightning - or that the Swiss authorities allowed planes to fly over the town so late after 'curfew'.
The whole storm was beautiful to watch though - I love seeing the power and the spectacle of summer storms. We hardly get any in Scotland, so this summer in Basel has been stunning.
