Wow, if that was at 1am, I didn't wake up until 4am, and it was a rather impressive light and thunder show. I usually don't wake up for storms since I grew up in storm country. That's a really long time for a lightning/thunderstorm to last. I got up and checked the radar at the time and it was a reasonably large cell, but not so huge as to last 3 hours. I wonder what the folks west of here got hit with?
I had a 4am wake-up call from the thunder as well...an hour later would've been better

Where I lived in Adliswil in between 02 and 09 there were shutters, but of a quality which would not have survived any hailshower ! And in the place before, to close the shutters took far too long to be of any use.

It seems that shutters get more damaged than windows through hail anyway... weird...

Cantonal facility insurance does not (always) cover hail damage. In any case, modern glass is much better suited to take heavy hail impact, shutters will almost always take some damage, so roll them up.

Up here in the Jura near the French border, we've had a bit of rain, no wind - very tame really. Stay safe.

The funny thing is that me and couple of friends were still swimming in the lake at around 11pm when the more sane among us got reminded of their work the next day.. Hail while swimming in the lake would be pretty insane.

Re: Lightning storm over Zurich

That was one of the most terrifying experiences in my life, definitly top 3 in Switzerland. That storm was over the Ritchterswil area at about 4:30am. The exact time I had to drive to work. I would have called into work, and just sat at the side of the road if I could have. I would be sure a lightening bolt hit my car, other then there is no damage that I can see.

The rain was so thick, it was an almost flash flood every where I drove. When I did drive it sprayed a wall of water to my right for almost 8 kilometers. There was so much lightening crashing all around I could barely see anymore it took forever(probably about 30 seconds) for them to re adjust after each crash. I was quite tired and sleepy when I left the house.

I had a 10 plus hour shift today and I worked like a fire cracker ever since.

Re: Lightning storm over Zurich

We had a doozy in Barcelona from midnight to about 2am and then starting at 4:30am. One big storm if it stretched from Barcelona-Zurich! No hail for us, though!

Re: Lightning storm over Zurich

No hail here, but constant lightning flashes for about half an hour.

I was terrified by the wind - it sounded like a freight train coming for me - every few minutes it would come. I put my head under the duvet - like that would help!!
Even considered the cellar at one point.

This morning, tiles were off and all my plants blown over - including a bl**dy heavy terracotta pot with a tree in it!!
