Re: Lightning storm over Zurich

Where I live, a storm is coming again! I think I will have a heart attack because of fear and not sleeping for 3 nights . But last night was terrible .
Now I can see a lot of lightnings and the thunders are strong.

I found this interesting - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning - as I had no idea there were all these different forms of lightning.

Isn't that called sheet lightning?
Back where I come from, we called it 'heat lightning'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_lightning

I don't know if it's still used, but it used to be applied on those hot, deadly windless/breezeless, muggy nights when the sky would tease you endlessly with flashes of light, promising you a cooling thunderstorm and leave you crushed without one.

'Sheet lightning' is when it gets really close and loud and flashy. Those of the shee-it dialect should get the joke. SHEE-IT, that was some serious lightning!

Wow! I thought all buildings in der Schweiz had them. That's too bad on that.
Well, I am simply not yet used to have super-strong windows financed by the airport company

Ah! That explains it then.

I guess if the windows are strong enough to soundproof you from all the air traffic noise then they should be good to handle hail stones too.

Not necessarily. This car window was smashed by hail in Switzerland last week. That is toughened glass.

Toughened glass is usually only used in doors and windows at low level in houses. It should be marked in one corner if it is toughened

Yikes! Looks like a scene from one of those car chase movies where lots of bullets have been flying around!

After reading some of the comments on this thread, today I double checked with my Landlord regarding the use of shutters against hailstones and was advised to close them during such adverse weather conditions. Also that if there were any dents in the shutters as a result, to let them know soonest and that damages would be covered under the buildings insurance policy (Gebäudeversicherung) whom they would contact to handle everything.

They also stressed that the balcony awning, if open, should be retracted immediately as hailstones would almost certainly damage or destroy this.

For me, I go with what my Landlord advises.
