Re: 1st August

On a related topic, I'm looking into the possibility of getting the necessary permit to set fireworks off on 5th November. From reading around the subject via Google it seems you have to apply at the local police station.

Has anyone tried to do this recently and has some experience or recommendations to pass on? There was an amusing article on this subject in "Ticking Along With The Swiss" but I think this was written a few decades ago!

Cheers,
Nick

Re: 1st August

AWESOME!!!!
I find this so fun and surprising that fireworks are legal. I'm excited that the otherwise sorta strict government folks leave me free to blow off my own fingers. Yay!

Is is also cool to grill out by the lake? Do you have to find a "designated area" or are they chillaxed about that? Is a cooler full of beer also okay?

August 1st is gonna be awesome.

Fireworks ARE legal ! You can buy them in normal shopping places but also in "Apotheken" and "Drogerien" . The predecessors of Coop already sold the stuff back in 1958.

I still remember 1st August 1958. My parents were taking care of Texan visitors in Zurich, but my brother and me were with Grandmum in Schaffhausen, who had already assembled quite some fireworks before, but in the morning sent us to LVS (Lebensmittelverein Schaffhausen) and in early afternoon to the next Drogerie to purchase additional fireworks. So that in the evening, Grandmum as chief-supervisor carried up endless supplies out of the cellar, my brother acted as chief-fireworker and I was the assistant. We were launching stuff for hours and I heard that the neighbourhood spoke about the event and crazy Mrs S. and her grandsons for many years after that . No policemen came round, and nobody complained in any way

In the City of Zurich, you can find old-fashioned grill places in the Badis Mythenquai and Tiefenbrunnen, and City-owned free-of-charge electro-grills near Züri-Horn and near the Freizeitanlage Wollishofen. There are also two officially designated traditional grill places. You of course can take your own private grill with you to areas like the Arboretum (Zürich-Enge / General-Guisan-Quai, across from Genfer-Strasse)

Re: 1st August

Sweet! That sounds very fun. I missed July 4th this year so I'm considering this a make-up.

Thanks. This of course explains names like BETTlach etc !
Or even Bettenhausen, Bettmeralp.......just what were those Celts doing on top of a mountain?? Brrrrr..........!

PS : Please stop hijacking my thread with talk of July 4th and November 5th. One has gone and the other isn't coming for a while yet.
Don't mind the historical hijacking though - that is quite interesting........

While Bettmeralp is in the Ober-Wallis (but below the mountains) Bettenhausen is in the "Lowlands" (Berner Mittelland). The Celts, in case here the Helvetians, were settling all over the area, got under Roman rule and later when the area was taken over by the Alemannic tribes mixed up with them

Look at airplanes which here all have the pre-registration HB (Helvetischer Bund) and at the official name of the country in Latin : CH = Confoederatio Helvetica

Re: 1st August

I usually browse the papers for the more interesting guest speekers (every commune will have a local politician or celebrity delivering a speech on August 1). Unfortunately this year I'll be working.

Re: 1st August

You can be assured that on first of August there'll be fireworks and flames everywhere. But there is a small lake near zurich that is well know for its huge bon fires and displays of fireworks. Also in basel all the ships line up on the river and blast off huge firework, but the river is quite high this year so that event could end up being canceled

Basel - What to do on the 1st August?

Hi,

Even though I've been in Basel for just over 4 years, I've never been around for the 1st of August due to travel.

Anything you would recommend seeing/doing?

Cheers
