1st August

Not sure where to post this.
Have had a look through up and coming events and can't find anything for the Swiss National Day. We have events in our area but they are pretty dire and as I have my brother staying with me over this time, I would like to show him a bit of a party, with fireworks (optional) and some English speaking - as his Swissgerman is non-existent!!
Please don't tell me to organise something because I am cr@p at that and my garden is the size of a handkerchief.

Zürich, Bern would be fine. Will travel.

Don't travel too far. Ask some people in your village and around. A small lake with some hills around it may well result in some nice fireworks being done, and an open fire also put up. There may be a local company or simply a local person who is fireworks addict, which may mean excellent fireworks

Nice idea Möpp, but afraid I am a bit too poor for that. Looks great, though!

BUT late evening dinners are the thing to go for, in places with a nice view over the area, so that you can see the fireworks, for example when having a BBQ. The lousy weather right now is good in so far as it will not be too dry for the fireworks and no restrictions will be put in place by the authorities.

Re: 1st August

Hmmmm.....after reading this, we may stay at home and do our own thing.

Our local events are very political (and boring) - although a brunch is always a good idea.
We could always gate-crash my teenage daughter's Waldfest - should be a laugh!!!!
Seriously, Basel looks the most promising at the moment.
Fireworks over the Rhine......

I will be in a small place in the Solothurnese Prairies, named Oberbipp, with my sister-in-law and the fiancé of her daughter. Hope for good weather so that we can BBQ. We have to share the place with the father of a Kosovari family. But THIS time, we will invite him to share right from the beginning as we last time found out that he understands LOTS more about BBQ then we do

Have fun! Will hope for good weather.

We pass the Bipps all the time on the autobahn. Oberbipp and Niederbipp. Is a Bipp something special? It's a funny name. Or is it?

The name DOES sound funny, and I always joke about it, MISusing the name as a VERB, saying "wir bippen" "es darf gebippt werden" "hier wird gebippt" etc but in reality it goes back into history
http://www.swisscastles.ch/bern/bipp.html

My sister-in-law, who had lived in Zug but paid an increasing lot for her apartment, opted for Oberbipp as the apartment there (same size) costs about 30% of the one in Zug.

I personally at the beginning had some mixed feelings about the area as Oensingen (Zeughaus=Arsenal) for a decade was the place where the 3 weeks and a half military services started and Aarwangen the one where they continued for the first 4 days. But the place in a way is quite nice. And my sister-in-law is a super-cook !

Re: 1st August

"Bipp" comes from the Celtic term "Betwa", which meant 'settlement'.

Re: 1st August

Speaking of fireworks, does anyone know if fireworks are legal and if so where you buy them? (I doubt that it's the answer is in garish interstate-side fireworks booths in bordering states as it was back in the U.S.!)

Fireworks ARE legal ! You can buy them in normal shopping places but also in "Apotheken" and "Drogerien" . The predecessors of Coop already sold the stuff back in 1958.

I still remember 1st August 1958. My parents were taking care of Texan visitors in Zurich, but my brother and me were with Grandmum in Schaffhausen, who had already assembled quite some fireworks before, but in the morning sent us to LVS (Lebensmittelverein Schaffhausen) and in early afternoon to the next Drogerie to purchase additional fireworks. So that in the evening, Grandmum as chief-supervisor carried up endless supplies out of the cellar, my brother acted as chief-fireworker and I was the assistant. We were launching stuff for hours and I heard that the neighbourhood spoke about the event and crazy Mrs S. and her grandsons for many years after that . No policemen came round, and nobody complained in any way
