Disinfectant - Where Can I Find It?

Help!

I've just moved to the Zug area and checking out the various supermarkets. Although (thanks to EF) I now know that 'Javel' is bleach, I'm looking for disinfectant and I can't find it anywhere.

Is there a local equivalent of for example, 'Lysol', 'Clorox' or 'Dettol' brands of disinfectant? (In a bottle or/and in an aerosol spray?) I like to use disinfectant for the toilet handles and seats, soaking kitchen cloths and sponges etc. I grew up smelling pine disinfectant which was used at home, school, clinics and hospitals but there are nicer smelling ones available now - except perhaps not in Switzerland?

I've seen in the cleaning aisle bottles of (rubbing?) alcohol and petrol (not exactly sure what the petrol is used for?) and plenty of floor cleaners but no disinfectant, with the exception of some wipes in either Migros or the CoOp.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Re: Disinfectant - Where Can I Find It?

I had to fight the same battle: in my mother's house, bleach (and is chlorine smell) means clean.

You find "Javel" in Migros and Coop, on the detergent area. I don't like the "swiss" bleach, though (find it somehow weaker), so I buy mine in Aldi or in Portuguese small stores. Same thing with ethyl alcohol, which you cannot find even in German pharmacies over 60%: I import my 97% from Portugal...

You can also use the Cillit Bang, which works also kinda well. There is a special one for toilet, which kinda stinks like normal bleach, and has a spray bottle which makes it easier to use.

Hope that helps.

Re: Disinfectant - Where Can I Find It?

"Sagrotan" is one of the leading brands, sold in drugstores. But using Javel as a disinfectant is quite common. Hey, it's even available w/ a pine scent, just like home! BTW many Swiss don't disinfect at home, unles there's a medical indication, such as a salmonella infection. They clean, which they consider both necessary and sufficient, while using disifectants in a home environment may lead to the germs becoming resistant (this is not a problem with chlorine bleach).

The petrol you've seen is most likely Reinigungsbenzin aka Waschbenzin aka Stoddard solvent aka white spirit - the original dry cleaning solvent.

There is a spray that you can purchase from the pharmacy / apotheke called Pantasept. You spray it on a surface and leave it for five minutes to do it's thing.

http://www.leshop.ch/leshop/Main.do/...rch/Pantasept/

Ajax also makes a floor wash that supposedly kills 99% bacteria.

There is also a spray for kalk from Ajax that also supposedly kills bacteria:

The big pharmacy at Zurich HB sells dettol hand wash.

Informative post.

In our modern lives, we disinfect to excess (at least in the UK) and they don't do this in CH, as it's not good for immunity and also not good for the environment.
Last week on the BBC, there was a programme about allergies and why the rates are so high in Britain. The basic reason for this is that we now don't come into enough contact with germs as kids and so eventually, when our bodies
come into contact with the slightest thing, they go into manic overdrive and our immune systems react likewise - be it a foodstuff, pollen or substance.

This is very true...
By not exposing ourselves to germs, we never build up an immunity to them. There have been a lot of studies done about this, especially since all these hand-sanitizers, etc. have come onto the market.
Besides, just think of all those nasty chemicals that are being inhaled on a regular basis.

So true. The chemical fumes concern me much more than bugs and germs.

Our family joke is: You can eat off the floors in our house; if you scratch around long enough, you'll find something tasty!

I don't even remember the last time any of us were sick with a stomach bug.

I've been telling my OH this for years. It's a good reason not to do the cleaning In all seriousness though my son has hardly ever been sick unlike a lot of his friends and he has no allergies.

I do clean from time to time but I certainly don't use disinfectant.

You can find 100% in most stores, in which case it's called "Brennsprit".

(actually, more like 99%, as there is some methanol added to keep people from drinking it)

Anyway, for disinfectant, my girlfriend prefers "Lysoformio", not sure what it's called in other languages (I can look when I go home).

Thanks for the info Tom! I tried quite a couple of pharmacies but none had it I was asking for Äthanol, but I thought a pharmacist would know the chemical names for these things. Never crossed my mind it could be a language problem!

I shall raid the next pharmacy soon! Thanks again!

A dyed-in-the-wool alcoholic wouldn't care about a bit of methanol ("I'll risk one eye..."). Actually the stuff added is just some terribly bitter tasting but otherwise harmless substance. See here.

Re: Disinfectant - Where Can I Find It?

For disinfecting the toilet seat (or the floor if the cat has been sick ), I use 'burning alcohol' (comes in a green bottle in Migros) diluted with water in a spray bottle. I use about 1/3 alcohol to 2/3 water.

It seems to work well, and isn't too expensive! The smell's not great though...

Re: Disinfectant - Where Can I Find It?

We can buy Dettol in our local pharmacy, Sun Store I think it is. I only have the spray one. For floors, you can get bleach here in Coop, for example. For hands the sell desinfection, too, it's either on a regular shelve in pharmacies, or, the one they use in hospitals, you can buy too (but gota ask for it, I forgot the label, it's clear, blue, kills all germs including tbs, hiv, etc., either as liquid or gel).

I hope you know that your computer keyboard carries many more bacteria than your entire toilet bowl. And I hope you know that the keyboard might not like being treated with Brennsprit / Alcool à brûler.

Oh, and while we are at it, please note that the article "Alcool à brûler" in the French Wikipedia says it contains 5 - 10% methanol. That may be true in France but definitely not in Switzerland. Here the methanol content is a tiny fraction of 1 %, just due to impurities.

Re: Disinfectant - Where Can I Find It?

In the olden days anyone wishing to sell Dettol had to pay about 15'000 for the official canton chemist to test and approve it. When this was repeated 26 times for each canton, your average company decided it wasn't worth the cost. At this time you could ask any Indian grocer shop in Bern for Dettol, and surprisingly a bottle was brought out from under the counter and sold at a reasonable price.

Nowadays I believe all the EU must recognize the testing done in any EU approved laboratory, so life is a bit easier.

Now if you are looking for Dettol, try a local Indian shop, they seem to love the stuff. Also Head & Shoulders shampoo, and I think Marmite... !

Manor is selling Dettol spray disinfectant, saw it last week. Not cheap though, can't remember how much! I know the local Indian shop stocks normal bottles.
