Moomins are fin/swedish, no? They are great. But the only film I found is so scary my child can't watch it, argh.

How did we get to Scandinavia?

Something tells me CH is somewhat similar, strong character place as well, people set in some ways..It seems cold but really isn't, though.
Weeellll, Tove was from the Swedish side of Finland, just don't mention that around Finns. Besides, the stories themselves are much more in line with the Finnish way of approaching life than the Swedish. This is rather nuanced though. The Moomin stories/movies are rather dark and the antithesis of Disney. I find them rather scary, even as an adult.

And CH is not terribly similar, save maybe in the very large picture sense that it's a country, filled with people.

Most people outside of Switzerland treat it like it's just another country, perhaps even a somewhat insignificant country. The only cases they've heard of it has to do with the Alps, chocolates, knives and watches.

I find this sad, because it's much more deeper and profound than that, and people ought to realize it.

Why don't people realize that Switzerland is probably the greatest country in the world? I mean it, really. Let me explain.
  1. Tiny and basically powerless central government. Most of the political power is in different competing cantons. This means that people can vote with their feet, by moving between cantons in case their cantonal governments step out of line.
  2. Low taxes. More money is left in the hands of the people, so they can more efficiently engage in commerce, which, among other things, makes way for businesses that would not have existed had the government taxed money away in the first place, and give to charity as they choose.
  3. Privacy. To be compared with countries where people can literally snoop into their neighbors' financial affairs, look up their addresses, and find out who their spouses are.
  4. The right to bear arms, i.e. the government doesn't render people totally defenseless. In fact, government relies on this militia, should the need arise. This is great: The government trusts its people. In other countries, the governments don't trust them and completely disarm their populace.
I'm not sure people in general understand the implications of all this, and I fear they tend to take these things -- liberty, private property rights, and free markets -- for granted. People should realize that these basic things are the true foundations of the Swiss prosperity, and they must never, ever, lose these values. If they do, this world has no country to look up to anymore. Any other form of government eventually leads to a complete meltdown, as we are clearly witnessing across the world today.

The US used to share many of these values. Sadly, it has now turned into a complete totalitarian state of slaves. Let me explain: US citizens have to pay taxes in the US no matter where they go. If they get a citizenship in another country (usually after many years), they have to pay a tax to the US government to renounce their US citizenship. This, to me, is a form of slavery. Plus, the US dollar is on the verge of collapse and US government on the verge of bankruptcy. It won't remain the world superpower for much longer (not that it is good to be one).

I therefore am proud to say that I personally think that Switzerland is the only country that can, and should, proudly call itself the only beacon of light, liberty, and freedom left on the face of this otherwise rotting planet.

May God bless you all, and may God bless the Swiss Confederation.

seems like you like your freedoms and want to be as free as possible, which is why you like switzerland. so, did you know that switzerland has banned to construction of a particular shaped tower that is used by some of its citizens for religious purposes (aka minarets)? and that they are considering banning a particular garment which some of their citizens may chose to wear (aka burqa)?

i realize these may not bother you at the moment, but nevertheless its an indication that your freedoms can be taken away from you easily if the majority of swiss voters chose so. this cant happen in the USA as you have a strong constitution that protects the minorities rights against the majority. this is a hard earned american freedom that you may not appreciate at the moment...

Being from Switzerland, you don't
  1. have to pay taxes in Switzerland if you move abroad
  2. have to pay taxes to the Swiss government if you renounce your Swiss citizenship
  3. get groped and sexually harassed at Swiss airports
And Switzerland does not
  1. have a weak currency that is on the verge of failing completely
  2. have a government which is on the verge of total bankruptcy

I agree with you about the tower-building and clothes-wearing. I agree with you that the Swiss are moving, just like most countries, in the wrong direction in this respect. This is why I emphasized clearly that the Swiss must retain the values that made them prosper. Sadly, they seem to be on the wrong track. I find it sad that in a democracy, 51% of the people can so easily take away the rights of the other 49%.

The US is also on the wrong track. In the long run I have faith in the US -- because of its constitution and roots in liberty -- but in the short term it will first have to collapse before it can start rebuilding itself.

So in the short run, I am forced to look upon Switzerland as the best choice. But don't worry, the US will prosper in the long run too, given that it sticks to its Constitution, which it is nowhere close of doing these days.

Could you possibly be more self-contradictory? Oh, and why is it the people most critical of an institution that they profess to love are always the least likely to stick around and try to make things better? 'Oh...I'll monitor things from afar and encourage you all to do better! Won't that be fun?!'

Re: To all you Swiss people: Do realize how great your country is?

Erm...you need to do your homework at bit better. If a referendum result is 51% / 49%, the 51% side very often has to negotiate and compromise with the 49% side or they risk losing the next time there is a repeat referendum on the same subject.

Cheers,
Nick

First point...this might not happen in Swiis airports but it happened to me on the train when crossing the border, they were looking for receipts and practically took my purse without asking...Second point, that might not be such a good point for companies who operate from CH.

That reminds me of the first time I went to the States and was at a party in Washington DC in the 90s. The party was full of graduate, professionals in their mid twenties.
I asked them all a general knowledge question (suspecting they wouldn't know).
Which country produced the first motor car?
USA, Ford model T, all of them (that answered) answered. They were all confused and disbelieving that it wasn't the US.
I still don't believe the first decent bicycle was made in SCOTLAND of all places

I thought it was the other way around - that the Swiss constitution was influenced by the US constitution. I may be wrong on this one though.
