Is there a country in particular that you would consider to be "in"sane?
US, but hey, I only lived there for half my life (then I got a life)!

been here 3 years. not one single real friend. Hung out with the old friends of my gf which she had since childhood......prefer not to hang out with them. They still go drink before they go to the bar (outside in the park like a 16year old does)

It is sad really and does take a big toll on your social life. cant wait to move back to the USA in the future and hang out with (many times superficial ) friendly people.

I'm kind of in the same situation, been here a year and a half and I have not one single real friend, olny acquaintances, it seems the swiss people is not interested in making new friends, they are happy to keep their own circle. I hang out with my husband's friends, but they drink like stupids and it's impossible to have a decent conversation, plus the fact they don't speak good english.
pity...I wonder if I am ever going to find so many good friends as my dear friends in Chile.

Re: Difficulty in making friends?

One of the things that strikes me every time one of these "hard to make friends" threads pops up is that in my experience, it really isn't something exclusive to Switzerland.

It is simply a thing common to areas where there is a preponderance of people who spend their whole lives living in one place. As someone else mentioned, even Swiss folk who move between cantons have some (considerable) trouble fitting in in their new home. The same went for me if I moved to a town (in the US) where everyone knew everyone else since birth.

So, the "answer" is to make friends with people who, in some way, are like you... they moved there from "somewhere else." Hopefully, if you plan to stick around, some of those friends will also be folks who have either been there a while or plan to stick around themselves, otherwise, every 2 or 3 years you'll find yourself having to start all over again. This isn't necessarily a bad thing BUT if you are new to the whole "expat" thing, it definitely also takes some getting used to.

A few of the friends you meet along the way will probably be "lifelong" friends but in my experience, for folks who move in and move on, generally speaking, those "lifelong" friends don't tend to come from the local community - no matter the actual location of said community.

that kinda fits me. i moved here 10 years ago from brazil/argentina and most of my friends are foreigners or of foreign descent. they have this open mentality. i've made many friends in the student organization i'm in as well as playing capoeira.
maybe if a foreigner joins a shooting range, the swiss people think that he is in the wrong place since for them it's a swiss sport?

i'd look for places where people are open minded, like organisations for entrepreneurship and common social projects such as JCI or student organisations (if you are one)

Catch a train up Rigi and go for a hike....it is very good and perhaps you run into some nice folks.

Re: Difficulty in making friends?

Basically you have to join a club, and then you have to try an be really out going. I often feel frustrated working so hard to make friends, but, I have learned a lot an d feel any place will seem easy after Switzerland. keep your chin up, I wish you the best and know that you are not alone in the quest for friendship.

Re: Difficulty in making friends?

The pants and below pose might work to make a lot of guy friends but I must say I find it rather dificult to make some lady friends. And it is kind of strange when you are going out to a club or bar and start to talk to another woman without having any others intensions??!
