Tamper with the brakes. Atleast the thief will have a nice fall

maybe if you're baiting a criminal (loosened quick release works well too).

But it would suck to have to re-fix your brakes everytime you want to ride again. Also if you just undo them, they probably will notice right when they get on.

Re: Bicycle got stolen AGAIN

My son has bought a bike for Fr 5'400 and he informs me no lock is safe as the thieves spray a freezing liquid on the lock and smash the case with a hammer!

There are several places in Bern near the railway station where you can leave your bicycle for Fr 1,-- per 24 hours. If you open the .PDF link there is more information and a map. You can access the bike 24 / 7 by using a card.

I think there is also secure bike parking at the car park above the Postbus station (Grosse Schanze)

Please read my post again.

Bike was not stolen. But it is possible to smash any lock.

Re: Bicycle got stolen AGAIN

Yes I understand no lock is safe 100%, is anything man-made 100% safe?

What I find interesting is wondering why bicycle theft is seemingly so prevalent in Switzerland, bearing in mind that as far I know, crime here is low in comparison to mostly anywhere else I have been.

Bit of a noob here in Switzerland myself, but it seems to me it is the only country that has specific insurance for bicycles, correct me if I am wrong peeps. But I hear it's a huge insurance ring, then to resell later at a velobörse.

Re: Bicycle got stolen AGAIN

I think many bikes are stolen for a joy ride home after too many drinks.

The compulsory bicycle insurance sticker is for third party risky only. It has nothing to do with the bike, it compensates the victim in an accident. It might be abolished in 2013 and the risk added to the standard insurance policies.

Re: Bicycle got stolen AGAIN

Some years ago I biked it to the local Vita Parcours and left my bike locked to a railing. When I got back my saddlebag had bee rifled through and the cheapo lights I had in there taken - my own fault etc etc.

After that I bought myself a couple of mousetraps of the Tom-and-Jerry variety from Landis and put them in "loaded" position in my saddlebags.

Cheers,
Nick

Is bike theft really so prevalent in CH? Do you have stats to back that up?

I speak to anyone across the EU and there's bikes being stolen whenever and wherever from London, Cambridge, Bristol, Paris, Amsterdam, The Hague, St Louis, Moulhouse, Frieberg, to etc.

Another piece of advice...always try to park near nicer/less secure bikes.
