What's wrong with radio these days?

There must be about 10 different radio stations in the Zurich region. Why are they all playing the same 30 songs over and over again?

I'm driving in my car, constantly searching for a station that I can listen to from one moment to another and I can't do it so I always wind up back on DRS2 because now I know I'm going to be put to sleep.

at least 6 of them are just outlets of the union-owned SRG

Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

It's the direct consequence of cost cutting music promotion... They play what generates sales for what's left of the music corporations. It's so much cheaper to play from a 500 if not 100 track library than a 2000 if not more old style one. Radio for music is a dead media. Just forget it or go to internet streaming.

Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

Swiss radio stations are all controlled from Bern.
There is only one centrally held music library of vinyl and CD's.

Each Sunday, approximately 100 different tunes are selected for each radio station - all to be played during the following week - and packed in an old cardboard box, and couriered through the night to every station, in time for the start of their breakfast show, on Monday morning.
These tunes are continually played and alternated throughout the week, on each stations' different shows.

Immaterial of whichever channel I listen to, there are always tunes that I haven't heard, literally, in years (some, even decades), and then in the space of a week - on the same channel - I hear the same tune 2 or 3 times more.

British music of the 70's and 80's seems to be popular - a job lot of Radio 1 throw-outs must have been picked up cheap.

Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

Well, this explains why the stations play songs I've not heard since the stone age of the 70s. I mean, Lou Rawls b-sides?! I was starting to wonder if my car radio had been put into a geriatric mode or something since I never seem to get anything from this century on the airwaves. Good to know.

Mitziem has become a little unpopular
Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

It explains it for me too. I couldn`t understand why Whitney Houston`s I wanna dance with somebody, and Dolly Parton`s Island in the stream, were the consistent songs of choice.

Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

I haven't listened to radio very much. it's so bloody boring here. There's no designation of what specialty these stations have. There's no country station, no top 40 station, no easy listening/classical stations... *yawn* How do people even know what's hip/happening/now? Did anyone in Switzerland even know who Amy Winehouse was in 2007?

Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

After countless drives across Germany I can say it's not much better (if at all) there- same for France.

Here in the area where people speak a civilized language we have Couleur 3, which isn't bad at all as far as commercial radio goes. The other RSR stations are quite good as well, Espace 2 is great for classical music.

I find one particular program on Couleur 3 exceptional- La Planete Bleu.

The presenter, Yves Blanc, has a perfect voice for radio and can draw you into subject matter that should be boring but comes out fascinating.

Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

Same thing in Eastern Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Vorarlberg. The only decent station I could listen to is DRS2 (as long as you enjoy classical or jazz, depending on the time of day). As far as I'm concerned, since I only drive to work about 6 or 7 min. I plug in my ipod to my car's aux and listen to some random prog metal.

They must have been influenced by Johnnie Walker's Sounds of the 70's on BBC Radio 2.

I had no idea what Phil meant, so I googled it. A bit too surreal for Sunday morning, but for those curious: http://nyan.cat/

Or just hit PLAY here (30 million views, oh my!):

There's even a 10 hour version of it:

Sorry for the OT, had to share this.

You think Swiss radio is bad?

Surely you can spare a little pity for those of us who grew up with this man on the radio?

Forgotten .... but not gone.
Only today I watched a TOTP from '76 (on iPlayer) hosted by yours truly - Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato - as we used to call him.

Re: What's wrong with radio these days?

What's worse than the choice of music, is that it is all MPEG encoded for distribution between Zurich and the 170 transmitting stations. ALL radio programs (not just SRG) in CH pass first through Zurich, even RSI programs that got to transmitters in Ticino!
