So do you mean the CD / DVD disk ROM drive?
They are very cheap to replace.

Power down and power up the laptop, does it still happen ? It could be a bit of fluff fooling the optical sensor that determines whether a CD is present or not.
Get a cleaning CD (the ones with bristles on) or get a can of air duster and blow all inside and around the CD drive.

If you mean the CD (given a fixed drive doesn't have an eject button, I'll assume it's the CD/DVD drive), sometimes applications will spin it up and not exit. Quit all your applications and, if that doesn't work I'd reboot and see if that does the job (it should). If it's your hard drive, often the culprit is your web browser since they often consume all resources available and try for all that aren't.

remove the drive and replace, a connection has worked itself loose. There are screws underneath the laptop holding the drive in place, remove those and it should come out quite easily. Though watch out for that barbed wire!
Update drivers if necessary. | This user would like to thank Divesnowboy for this useful post: | |

Take it to a PC shop, the CD drive is not expensive, example below http://www.ricardo.ch/kaufen/compute...v/an651771194/
Take the laptop to a PC repair shop. It is a 5 minute job if he has the right part.

Put a good audio cd.. with no scratches.. if that can't be read and you hear the optics moving and also the speed increasing and decreasing.. it's over, you should buy another.

2. it does not recognize any CD ..in fact the computer does not recognize the CD drive..
3. it has gone crazy..the orange light on this is on sometime...i powered it off and on and it started spinning in the same way it was doing earlier..
4. there are no screws under it to open it ..i am not very comfortable in opening a laptop.
5. if it is disconnected then how come the orange light is on sometime and how is it spinning.

the cd drive should slide out without screws, there is probably a plastic tab that you slide (or rotate) to release the lock and then it will slide out.

It depends on the laptop model, but it's not hard to remove the drive. The difficult part is to remove the laptop's plastic cover (if you have a Dell Latitude with magnesium casing... and the drive screws are inside.. it's pretty awful)
I'm sure somebody on this forum can help you avoid the 500chf bill (which is another way of being Switzerlanded I guess).
L.E.:Now I saw you're actually from Lausanne. Check your PMs.

It seems to be a common problem... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Noteboo.../227497/page/2
You an check with a bootable disk (can be you windows copy) and press F8 (or the right key for boot menu) and select the drive. If it recognize the disk and the windows installation is loading, the drive is fine. Abort the operation (ALT+CTRL+DEL) and return to your OS.

Inside a DVD rom there are TWO lasers.
One reads CD ROMS, and the other is for reading DVD roms. They both focus through the one lens (which you would see if you took it apart).
Your CD ROM laser has probably failed. This happened to me, but instead the DVD rom laser failed.
There is no way to fix this, except taking the machine to a qualified repairer. But a new unit will probably cost you a lot less!..you can try....
