It's time to set up a community watch thing! It could help 2 fold, protect our quiet villages and give us immigrants something to do later than 10pm!

win-win!
Actually we already have it here in La Cote, it is like a neighborhoold watch system. We are actually the coordinator for our street/sub-neigbhorhood.

The police asked various communes about 2 years ago if they would want such a thing, and our commune instituted it. It is more like an early warning system and improves communication with the police. The police also give training to people to tell you how to better secure your house, how most crimes are committed, how the persons operate, how they likely enter, etc.

So indeed they are proactive here, if you want it. Contact your commune person in charge of the police, who should contact the Canton police in Bursins to get it instituted. In fact, I found them extremely proactive and very helpful, informative, and they want to do more.

Because everybody's partner is chuffed to bits to leave their career and become an unpaid house sitter ..

We don't need anything else than a proper official protection. Cops patrolling, etc. I like the idea of neighbor watch, I think it is a great way to socialize, and it will motivate the commune to actually see safety as a priority.
Problem is that system relies on the idea that all of the community members are "nice and innocent".

But if you have a scumbag among you, like your neighbor, you only end up training him on "how not to be caught" or on how they will "tell a mate" when it's free to rob people.

Like the "patrol" team is mate with the thief and curiously will be on the other end of the street at the time of the robbing...

It only gives you a "sense" of security but it's far from being reliable when you don't know the other community members.

With all the joking I was doing, I think that's excellent! Let's hope they can expand these types of things to other neighborhoods.

I'm still going to see if I can get you all some doughnuts! :P There is a bakery in Savigny that makes the best "jelly doughnuts".

Pepper spray IS legal here, you can buy it in any gun shop. The problem is many gentlemen that regularly eat hot chilies are immune!
And some people even spray it on their food! (not that I would personally do that, though I am tempted to try it)

However, no-one is immune to it if it gets in their eyes! But, on my skin or inhaling, not a problem.

Great!
I can't wait that such activities spread trust and confidence among your local "community".

Then I'll tell some mates to rob your place once I will know the patrol system and what kind of "practices" you are applying.

You know, nothing personal, it's just you:
a) made too much noise after 22pm
b) I don't like your face
c) Your kids have shouted in the playground one day
d) You have put a paper with your name on the mailbox
e) bloody foreigner, steal my job!

The "community member" living at the end of your street.

Re: filthy stinking scum alert ( la cote, VD )

I just wanted to say 2 things:

1. Some dreadful folks (2 youngish men) tried to break into our back garden fence last weekend until I scared them off with a baseball bat, a lot of yelling and a can of bug spray. (seriously....it's great protection and temporarily blinds the 'perp' until he can get help -- and yes, I said perp --- an yes, I watch too much CSI). The police looked for them but didn't find anything.

2. My father in-law's business (carrosserie aka auto body shop) has been thieved every august for the past 3 years and last year, twice. Filth flarn fitlh. The police told us the thieves LOVE vacation time.

Stay safe out there y'all!

best,
rebecca

Lock the front door. Switch off/take out the fuses. Grab a megaphone and whisper "Hey Candycane".

Ok, jokes aside. Avoid direct confrontation by all means. Leave the place immediately or lock yourself in a secure room and alert the police.

Re: filthy stinking scum alert ( la cote, VD )

Good point, Lost. I should mention that whilst I scared the b%ST&%*s off, I wouldn't recommend knowingly confronting someone. In our case, I was on our back terrasse reading, the baseball bat was next to me because my nephew and husband had been playing earlier...and my initial reaction was, 'What the heck is that noise on my gate.' Therefore, when I looked over the back terrasse and people there I yelled. Gut reaction. I live in a quiet area of a medium sized village but I am surrounded by neighbors who all have windows open and are surprisingly aware of everything that goes on around us. Two of them had called the police before I even got back into the house. So...don't follow my actions and heed the advice of Lost.

best,
rebecca

Made me think of those cans of insecticide for hornet's nests that squirt a good jet several meters. You can't possibly need a permit for that.

Certainly, but those things are poison....and despite the circumstances, one must think of the consequences.
