72,000 sounds low to me for an architect with that much experience - I thought only teachers ( commonly being the lowly paid of tertiary educated people in many countries) got that sort of salary.
I'll ask 84K for start? I received an info of a friend, that his cousin , earns, I think close to Zug, 90K with 5 years of experience.

Re: Salary in Neuchatel.. help!

Intern - 72k, not bad. Not great, but not bad, and by sounds of other knowledgeable posters of the area, then sounds better than it would in Zurich in terms of how far your money will go.

As for the architect guy, tooooo low! At your age, and experience this sounds awfully low for Zurich.

The salary calculators that I've been seeing point me a salary between 90K and 100K without bonus and 40 to 42hours of work per week

42 hour weeks are a standard generally.

90-100k would be more realisitic I would imagine. Thats not bad for single person, assuming you are.

Ok. Thanks! I'll ask a salary between those two values. I've been checking houses / apartments of 1 room in Zurich center and it's very high! Starting 2000CHF..
I'm not "single" my, about to be, wife, is a Graphic and Web designer and she will go with me and search for a job in her area, since she's very good at, and have a great portfolio I think it would not be hard to find something. I just don't understand why woman are paid less then a men

Good luck!

By the way, If the company are not prepared to revise the offer, I would not necessarily give up on the idea of coming here. I guess it all depends on your lifestyle where you currently are, but despite the expense Zurich is a great place to live. The original offer would by no means make it a real struggle to live or anything, I am merely pointing out that 72k seems low for a) your age and b) your experience. That said, you mention your wife to be, and although you are hopeful she will find a job rather quickly, if she didnít then you may struggle a bit if the offer is not in the 90k region.

To put into perspective, I am 7 years younger than you, and only 4 years experienced in my area, and my first salary offer in Zurich was 85k. I have since gone significantly beyond that. Although I work in specialist area of taxation, I would imagine your area be equally as specialist in its own right and thus should be equally comparable with a similar salary. The way I understand the system works here, when applying a work permit for a non-Swiss employee, the cantons look at various things like age, qualifications, experience etc to determine the minimum requirement of what you should be paid. I would be surprised if 72k would pass that criteria. We have had people in our office permits rejected because the salary was not high enough.

Re: Salary in Neuchatel.. help!

The cost of living in Zurich and La Chaux de Fonds is vastly different- not just rents, but also eating out, etc. Also La Chaux de Fonds is very near France so you can go shopping there, etc.

Thank you so much for the info! Never thought it was that way. I was in Zurich last weekend to "check" the city, and I liked it. My biggest concern was missing the sea , as a live close to it here, but the lake its huge enough!
Lets see if I get the job for that salary, if not I'll continue trying.

Thank you all for the help! I'll keep in touch with this forum. A very helpful one!

I invite everyone of you to try visit Porto = sea; river; old town; great night life; wine; food; etc etc.. the only thing that is not so great..jobs..

Speaking of jobs.. I received the answer..they think that above 72000CHF was to much .. well I'm still looking for a job, since I will have to move to Zurich beginning of next year.. I will go search to Zurich next week.. so if anybody know any vacancy please let me know

I have been Told that you can compare your wages at a rate of 2.1 even though the exchange rate differs. That makes it 36k. Which would not be bad in the uk right?

It don't really matter if it's Ok in the UK if you are not living in the UK.

Well what I was getting at is if you divide it 2-1 then you can compare it to the Uk salary and thus guage how good the salary is... Even though exchange rate is 1.4, the higher cost of living means that dividing it in half is more accurate...

Re: Salary in Neuchatel.. help!

Don't get it, why do you 'have to' move to Zurich next year?

I find it sad that people want to move here, and yet don't want to move here at all. Why do it? if you already know that you'd want to spend all your time and money going back home instead of discovering your new world, and go 'beyond' - beyond yourself being the most rewarding.

I'm still not sure that's a good way to look at things. I could be a lot of money in the UK, it could be little money in the UK. You are earning & spending CHF so it's not really relevant.

There have been a few people on this forum who figured out quite quickly that what looked like a good salary in the UK was not enough to pay for 2 households they planned on keeping.

You need to figure out if it's a good competitive salary on the local market. There are plenty of calculators out there which should be taken as a guide line, not as the be all end all.

Hi there, sorry for joining the conversation a bit late. Most of my friends are Architects in the Zurich area (each with Masters degree and 5+ years experience) and everyone's salary is around the 72'000 mark.

Yes I know, thatís one of the reasons why many start their own business in their mid thirties to at least be able to play (work!) by their own rules or else change career altogether.

Re: Salary in Neuchatel.. help!

Perhaps a good idea to change the thread title - as it was about La Chaux-de-Fonds before, and now about Zurich - and never about Neuchatel. The realities of all 3 towns are indeed very different, and so will be rents and salaries.
