I would recommend one of these:

(also handy for disposing of food scraps after dinner)
Pit bulls actually make really, really lousy guard dogs. I hate to see myths perpetuated about these breeds.

I second that. I (used to) train Muay Thai which is a very straight-forward stand up technique that aims to hurt, not look fancy. But in any real life situation it's all about quick reflexes, surprise and brawling, weight and muscles DO matter. Unless, like you said, they train with 80+ kg guys that simply run them over, any sparring in self defence classes are likely of no good at all in a real life situation. Pepper spray is still good advice, know how to use it though and practice. Get the more potent one and use it very liberally.
Pepperspray always has the drawback, that depending on the wind you get it straight back in your face. Best bet is to cut and run, worry about dented ego later.

Re: How do you protect yourself?

Being on an upper floor is a bit of a safety in and of itself. To burgle your home or assault you, the perpetrator must:

1. Go up several flights, past occupied (and potentially nosy) apartments
2. Go back down these same flights, again without being noticed.

Once on the upper floor, the intruder, like yourself, has no way out except back down, which puts them at risk of being noticed, as well as it is a burden to carry any loot down. Criminals tend to prefer easier targets- ground floor units with discrete entrances and units where nobody's home; if they wanted to work hard for their money, they'd probably be doing honest work.

Use your common sense. Don't open doors for strangers (some criminals scan your apartment for valuables, and identify targets for later action) and an audible alarm system that attracts unwanted (for the criminal) attention is an idea (even if its you banging pots & pans together to get a neighbor's attention [I don't know if audible home alarms are available in Switzerland? I could be wrong]) also.

Having a good relationship with neighbors can be helpful also- a trusted neighbor's apartment can be a good place to go if something dangerous happens, and this neighbor can help 'keep an eye' on your place.

Re: How do you protect yourself?

I think any weapon can make a situation worse than it already is.
If someone breaks in on purpose, they can be well prepared for someone defending their property (e.g. with a firearm).
Especially when it is an eastern european criminal, who are not afraid to shoot or hurt you.

I would consider leaving the house asap or just give them what they want (if you are insured).
It is not worth giving your life or getting injured for materialism

I'm sorry I have over-stepped the bounds. I just want to get the word out.

Now my answer to a very important question has been deleted.

When the first class ran in October, several people asked why I didn't post it here. I guess this should answer their question.

I'm sure you offer a valuable service...... but misplaced advertising generally isn't well accepted by anyone.

I think the best way to contribute to the thread would be to start your own thread in the "Commercial" section.

........and then past a 'link' to that thread in here.

People who are genuinely interested will pursue it by themselves while minimising the 'hard sale' effect on everyone else reading the thread.

I don't offer a service. I am a victim currently going through the process of recovery and dealing with the Swiss Police. When the lady asks "How do you protect yourself?" offering information about the class I took (and why) seems more useful than posting a photo of a poor misunderstood dog or a fantasy robocop uniform. But I get it. Hope it doesn't happen to you.

No,

This is useful...... and what you should have done before:

Women Personal Safety and Self-Defense: 2 Hrs Crash Course Gold

If you are interested in a serious course in self defense, follow the link above.

Now people can find the useful information

As I said before, what you had to post was important and useful.... getting all emotional about it doesn't help anyone.

If it's a east European gangster I would release our polish nanny on him. She is of a granmotherly age and polish babcias ( equivalent of babushkas) have a fearsome reputation for handbagging and nagging delinquents into line.

I picked on you as you seem to have done a lot of postings regarding the issue in all those threads, you could have instead Created a thread with your experience and it would have brought more attention to it.

Im sorry if it offended you and I think it's terrible that it happened to you.

If you have read enough about this forum. you'd realize that some of us here are better train with deal with assailants than others. While I'm not batman, I can more or less handle myself in Hand to Hand if necessary. Being from Tj I know how to keep myself Away from trouble.

When there is talk about self defense techniques I'm VERY skeptical.. and I mean VERY. It's a good idea to have a seminar as long as the main focus is to defuse situations and be aware.

You write the question was "very important" but you do not state your answer was "very important" so I assume we did not miss much?
