How do you protect yourself?

I read this thread
filthy stinking scum alert ( la cote, VD )

But rather than derail it I thought I'd start a new one. Sorry Mod's if this is wrong.

My husband is away quite often. I was frightened a couple of weeks ago when a neighbour accidentally tried to enter our apartment instead of his own and it got me thinking; I've not got any manner of protecting myself if someone was to break in (my husband suggested investing in pepper-spray for a worst case scenario). I really don't have any manner of escape (we're on the third floor and the only exit is out the front door) or way to protect myself other than a frypan.

So what do you do/ have to protect yourself?

Re: How do you protect yourself?

Well except the pepper spray and swiss army knife i have in my bag, probably a frying pan as well. The dog will be useless in those situations. The little mutt its still in the "all people are my friends stage"

Pepper spray IS legal here, you can buy it in any gun shop. The problem is many gentlemen that regularly eat hot chilies are immune! The torch isn't a good idea either as an intruder would easily disarm you and use it against you, as unlike him, you don't get much practice!

I advise you to ask at the police station for an approved security installer, and fit a strong chain or link to the door. Cheap and very effective.

Most of the stuff sold here is illegal in Switzerland, but the postman can still bring them...

Third floor of an apartment block in Lausanne? I think your main concern would be the assault on your bank balance every rent payment day.

Leave the radio on. But then you might risk having the landlord breaking in, it seems, to switch it off (and inpect your toilet bowl while at it)..

Here in the German part shouting 'DAS IST VERBOTEN !!' is typically good enough to make any criminal walk away with his tail between his legs

Stop washing, using perfume and deodorant and after a couple of weeks no one will come near you (by choice anyway)

Well, in my case, that's the reason there's not too much left in the apartment worth stealing

i like the idea of a taser, but i guess i would be too scared to use it, pepper spray seems like the safest option...small, accessible and causes alot of pain

Re: How do you protect yourself?

Pepper spray, a personal alarm, and a baseball bat. If you suspect someone is trying to enter call 117, if they get through the door hit the alarm as you shout that the cops have been called, spray, and if you don't have a clear shot to run hit them hard several times and then run. Don't bother with the bat if you don't think you are prepared to injure someone- you'll just end up having it used on you. That goes for any weapon.

Re: How do you protect yourself?

I got plain and simple guns and ammo at home... but wouldn't be any good. Ammo is locked away so would need to find key first, tear open packages, in panick all bullets fall on floor rolling everywhere etc etc

How about a kitchen knife ? Or in my case I could paralize them from laughter by appearing in front of them naked

I'd go on to the balcony and make a terrible racket until the neighbours woke up and called the police.

Anyone who is nasty enough to want to break into my flat while I'm in it is probably also going to be nasty enough to use any weapons I brandish right back on me.

Running away and screaming is almost always the best thing to do when threatened by a criminal.

I concur and this is probably what I would do. I am afraid of something like this happening. I wish that as well as bomb shelters, builders were required to build fire/ emergency escapes.

Re: How do you protect yourself?

some form of martial art if you are expecting something to reach or experience that stage of confrontation.

my 2 choices would be wing chun or krav maga, both are aimed at brutal and efficient means of counter attacks.

A friend teaches wing chun at a slightly accelerated pace but it is easily followed and practiced at home alone.

Another frind attends a krav maga school and that is also a tried and tested defence system.

Do not have a weapon handy unless you know exactly how to use it, or it will end up being used on you!

Pro active is far better than reactive, eg dont leave windows/doors open, fit a security chain and a wide door viewer, do not allow someone in the building unless you know them etc...

all common sense.
