| | Re: Why the European houses have no ceiling fan | Quote: | | | | | Most of all, aren't ceiling fans pricey? Even if you find it in a store, the installation, etc. | | | | | Well, other than Switzerland (where handwork is usually the double of the material cost), the instalation and the object itself isn't thaaaaaat expensive. The costs of having it on, on the other hand, are quite heavy in the end of the month, specially because of the psycological effect of "if it's at minimum speed, it can't spend that much energy during the day and night, can it?".
There are actually quite fancy designer fans out there, but most of them are kinda dangerous (think blade caroussel)...
If you are having problems with the heat, luckycharm, you can get a standing fan in Migros or Coop. They have the advantage of being able to be transported wherever you want Be aware of the electricity bill, though!

| | Re: Why the European houses have no ceiling fan | Quote: | | | | | Yes, there is a reason: it's because they're ugly. | | | | |
Ugly? Perhaps. Functional, absolutely. We have them on the top floor of the house where the ceilings are high and they are attached to the beams. They really help circulate the air on hot summer nights, plus they have a light. They operate with a remote.
I was very nervous at first as they are heavy but I had them professionally installed.

We can't get our system to work properly and actually cool the apartment. | | | | | Indeed - Ask any poor Swiss Re unfortunate based in Soodring 33 about that.
Was talking with someone about the smelly greenhouse effect there, and he turned out to be one of the designing architects.
Would all have been reasonably OK, he reckoned, if SR hadn't decided to put hugely more people in the building than it was originally designed for. |

Swiss rely on mountain breezes and the fohn. In Iran houses have always been architecturally designed to draw air through the house.
We installed ceiling fans in Switzerland, once we figured out the Electrical wiring ( there is an EF thread on this). But never mind ceiling fans what about window screens, ac, garbage disposal units, water softeners, humidity control as standard equipment?

I think summers aren't that hot. I have one installed in the master bedroom (after living for 8 years in TX), but rarely use it. The kids will get one in the upper floor, there might be some use of it. And I think they don't sell pretty ones in Switzerland, but they are ok for bedrooms.

If we have no fans, then the proverbial shit can't be hitting them; we are therefore damned to be perfect.

We have a ceiling fan - we have a furnished apartment and the ceiling fan was already here in the living room. Wish there was one in the bedroom as well.
Seeing that most unfurnished places don't even supply a ceiling light - if you want one you can just put in yourself.

| | Re: Why the European houses have no ceiling fan | Quote: | | | | | Hello frens,
I was wondering why there are no ceiling fans in Swiss and I guess it is the same with most of the European Countries.
Is there any specific reason behind this. I find the summers here are hot enough to want a fan. | | | | | can only speak for myself, but at home we have floor standing fans which we take out during the summer, we also have angled roof so it wouldn't work anyway ...
I guess they are too ugly or too tricky to mount, not everybody owns a concrete drilling machine... |

If you have a modern oven then you also have a fan. Open the ovendoor, run the oven on low temperatur and switch the button to the fan sign. It's called "Umluft". Live and learn.

We can't get our system to work properly and actually cool the apartment. | | | | | Ah, c'mon Dodgy Minergie is just a list of rules and ideals, and a "science" still in development. And like all things man made, the quality of the finished product depends a lot on the execution... There are unfortunately a lot of büros without scrupuls that fake or dodge the quoficients just to be able to collect a couple more francs just because there is a Minergie stamp on it
But hei, just coz your favourite BMW comes with a faulty airbag, doesn't make you hate the whole brand, or does it?
I'm sure there is a solution for your... arse...
