Re: What do you make? Show us your stuff...

Hi everyone,
My wife makes one-of-a-kind teddy bears as a hobby.
Usually she makes them in couples and dresses them in almost exact replicas of the national costumes of the cantons of Switzerland.
With a help of her friend, who is a professional fashion designer, my wife makes the costumes. She also does the embroidery and knits the hats. Occasionally I help her by designing and making jewellery and buttons.
She has shown some of her bears at the international teddies festivals in Germany and UK.
Here are a few pictures of her creations:

Yes, each and every detail of the bears and their costumes is handmade including the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist and leg joints as well as the stuffed leather noses that feel like real. The jewellery is made of fine silver and real garnets.

With regards to the 'how much' question, I can't really give you a clear answer because she has never offered any of her bears for sale. An expert at the last year's teddy bear show in Germany told her that if she ever decided to sell any of her creations she would have to consider doing that at via an international auction. His estimate figure sounded a bit shocking: EUR 4,000-5,000 or even higher. I am not sure if he was right...

I don't like teddybears but, as a humble quilt maker, I can appreciate the beautiful workmanship. Congratulations.

On average it takes between 4 and 8 weeks to make one bear couple, depending on the complexity of their costumes and the jewellery. My wife also spends quite a lot of time on researching the history of design of Swiss national costumes. We found some old books covering this subject, visited several museums and the HQ of the Swiss Association of National Costumes, searched the internet for more images... Still every design for the embroidery and the jewellery we develop ourselves on the basis of the traditional motifs. Sometimes it also appears quite difficult to find suitable fabrics. Patterns for making the bears my wife also develops herself...

Sorry to hear about your health issues Soups, you might not be able to do your creations anymore but hopefully you are healthy enough to deal with you everyday life. To be honest that kitchen I only made it because they aske me to for a 3D Max class but had never done it before and probably not again, patience isnt my virtue

@Sagris: your wife has a beautiful talent! If only... Ive never touched a sewing machine nor a needle in my life but is something I would like to learn at some point.
